It's typical Hobie.... Well designed and does what it's supposed to do. There's a plastic plug inside that you remove before you turn on the motor to circulate water. You leave the plug in place when you stop at the bait shop to buy live bait....and dump them in the live well with up to 8 gallons of water. When you launch the boat, turn on the motor and remove the plug to circulate the water. The only thing to remember is to keep the motor/pump running continually if there's bait(or) your catch in the live well. When you turn off the motor, circulation stops and all the water will drain back through the pump...... UNLESS you put the plastic plug back on the pump outlet and THEN turn off the motor. This way, the water will remain in the live well while you transport the bait or your catch back home. You can also set the depth to your liking. Hope this helps.
