Thanks for taking the pictures, it's all clear now.

I see that you extended your trailer with aluminum tubing. I'm thinking about doing the same thing. My current trailer is 11' 8" and from what I have read here I need 18'6" to duplicate the length of the Trailex SUT350S. So I may just cut the current tongue completely or partially off and bolt in a piece of aluminum square tubing.

Thanks again for all the help. I have a chicken and egg situation trying to make a trailer for a TI I don't have yet :)

Chris

Hi guys has Hobie actually officially released specifications and pictures of the new 2015 model AI? I'm interested in one, but I must say if what I've read in this thread about no handles is true then this will be a big negative imo.

Think about it, nobody is going to release a kayak without handles. The one they had at that show was as they said the first one out of the mold and they probably worked day and night to get something to display at the show. I'm sure once the production units star to ship in December everything will be worked out. Actually I'm excited to see it.
Once the TI came out the floor fell out on AI sales I assume, so this redesign is welcome by all of us fans.

Official release isn't until September 1st. Everything that has been discussed is "speculation" based upon some videos that were shot at an outdoor show. Although they were kind of confirmed by a Hobie representative. ;)

I wouldn't count on no handles. This being one of the first boats out of the mold and hastily assembled for the show;It could have been overlooked.

Wonder if the flexible self adhesive touch screen will come standard or will be an option.

Looks like we have a much larger daggerboard.

That daggerboard system, provided we're talking about using the boat in sailing mode with amas, akas and sail, would be a big deal for me. I've often lamented that my AI drop in DB is a pain in the rear to put and keep somewhere everytime you come in or need to pull it due to shallow water. Well... not a terrible pain, but an inconvenience for sure compared to the TI. Being able to just flip it up or down at the touch of a lever will be a nice feature.

I don't need another boat, but have already put in a word to my local dealer that I'll take the first one they get. I plan to change out the seat, but will certainly give it a go first as I may be wrong about it and what I do with my AI. Overall, I think this will be a nice all around fishing/sailing/adventuring vessel.

Everyone is watching all this new stuff with Hobie with great interest, of course the audience here is already biased.

One thing that I think slipped thru the cracks (as far as importance) is when interviewed they said the new roller bearing mirage drive will be ten percent more efficient than the current mirage drives. This may sound like a small and insignificant number to some, but to me this is huge.( I'm a human powered propulsion nut BTW)
The reason being when the turbo mirage came out it was advertised to be 10% more efficient than the stock mirage. Those of us who started out on the standard drives, then moved up to the turbo drives, can say the difference is huge between the standard mirage drive and the turbo, and if your legs are conditioned enough for the turbo drive, it's a no brainer decision to use them. I know of nobody who has them who would want to go back to the standard ones (you would have to pry them from my dead feet LOL).
I would love to try out the new ones, or have someone like Roadrunner do a real review to see if there is indeed a difference or just a lot of hype.

Since the fins are the same, any difference would come from a reduction in friction due to the new bearings. Because the old unit seems to be fairly good in that regard, I'd say 10% less friction is a pretty bold statement. But I can't dismiss it without trying it. The test is how it performs under pressure, of course, as that's where friction is created.

Likewise for me ...but it would mean I wouldn't be upgrading. For my usage, mostly in kayak mode, the built in DB would be a negative.

I'm very interested to see what Hobie are going to do with their Adventure kayak now that the AI has a built in DB. I wonder whether it will be only sold like the TI and the old Adventure hull will remain for the kayak users?
Sure the separate DB was a bit of a pain (especially if you forgot to bring it) but it added to the AI's versatility. A built in DB, while great for sailing as an AI, is just extra weight and drag when in kayak mode, decreasing versatility.
Only a couple of days before all will be revealed. Looking forward to all our questions being answered! :)

Yea they should have a countdown timer playing the jeopardy theme music on their home page (wouldn't that be annoying)

Yes, I think the new AI will be a better sailing vessel but a lesser kayak. My suspicion, however, is that more sailors are buying these than kayakers, if in fact we can even reasonably ascertain the difference between the two in this somewhat cross-over realm.
