I WOULD LIKE TO TITLE THIS POST: THE UNSUNG HEROINE -- THE IDLER PULLEY. I thought it would be more helpful with the drive title. For the sake of brevity, and because I really don't know, I will omit a chronological chain of events.

My idler pulley became damaged, the idler pulley cable slipped off and my peddle was catching on it randomly. How I didn't put this together sooner is a story that's better face to face.

NO WHERE could I actually find an article or video to explain how the pulley is replaced. Did I miss it somewhere? Getting the somewhat scuffed up cable back on was easy. (Will be replacing the nyloc nuts...)

I've ordered a new assembly since it is very reasonable. Called Hobie SD for instructions since the local dealer here was worthless. They were great. Loosening the set screw -- obvious. The step I was just plain unfamiliar with was the shaft pin removal. I figure when I get the new one it will be clear once I push the pin out how it all goes together. I'm looking forward to the "two minute" job. That idler pulley makes a HUGE difference in the smoothness of the pedaling. Naturally, Hobie put it there for a reason.

It pays to replace the nylock nuts each time you remove the nuts as the nylon gets chewed up the first time it's used and then upon subsequent reuse, it does not maintain/has lost it's anti back-out properties as a new nut provides.
I use a good waterproof marine grease on the idler shaft to lessen wear.
