I typically stuff an insulated soft-sided cooler down my Outback's 8" round hatch. I have two water bottles and some power bars, all cooled by refreezable ice packs. It works great except that it's a challenge to extract the rectangular cooler from the round hatch.

I am now rethinking how to better do this and so am pondering purchasing a Hobie Deep Gear Bucket. It might be easier to access since I don't think I have to remove the bucket …just the bucket lid .and reach in… Am also wondering if Hobie's bucket has enough insulation properties (appears to be thin plastic) to keep drinks cool for 4-5 hours on a hot day?

Anyone have experience with this deep bucket item as a cooler?

With a small freezer brick it will only just keep a can of softdrink cool for 2-3 hrs but doesn't work as well as a cooler bag.

I use the deep gear bucket in my Revo11, but I use it as a tackle box instead of a cooler. Really not much space in there to use it as a cooler and the walls are thin plastic like the regular sized gear bucket that comes with your other Hobie kayaks.

Do you have the hatch liner for your front hatch? that might make for a better spot to either fill with a small amount of ice and beverages or place your soft cooler.
