I believe I had made a comment earlier last year that the then current AI made for a great all around kayak sans akas, amas and sails, and that the sort of changes folks were asking for would reduce it's usefulness as a stand along kayak but improve its sailing ability. So for Hobie, it was a matter of determining which form most of its customers used the boat in. Apparently, most of us use it in full sailing mode most of the time.

There was no way to add the various features and changes that were being requested without having the boat get larger and heavier. But unless you're using it in kayak mode, that shouldn't be a problem. If it is, there will be plenty of used 2014 and prior models for sale now.

And anyone that wants the features of the new boat at the same weight and size as the old boat, well.... you can either have your cake or eat it, but rarely both.

they for sure made it more of a sailing kayak and less of a paddling kayak... but even though its a beast it will still paddle and in the vantage seat.. but I think your right.. not many folks stripped the old AI down for a paddle.. to me the old AI hull is a very fast paddle kayak stripped down.. I used to love paddling that kayak... the new 2015 AI is not a fast paddle kayak but for sure a better sailor..

Curious to know how it performs stripped down and pedaled (not paddled).

tom.... striped down and just peddling the new 2015 AI is great.... but for sure stripped down you will notice a big difference in the sleekness and design on the old hull and new hull.. so yes it peddles good... but not as fast as the old hull design... a pro angler paddles ok right... but for real there was nothing faster under peddle or paddle than the old adventure hull.. more work will be required for the same results.... stripped down you will feel that new rudder action.. by cranking it hard almost ended up in the water a few times.. so that's the biggest difference I noticed stripped down and that it is much slower under paddle and peddle... hope my reviews are helpful.. I wonder if the TI hull is much different performance wise between the '14 and '15. I believe the only thing they changed in the TI is the bow shape.

Reading about the extra weight I've decided to bite the bullet and order a trailer, car topping imo is to much aggro. Plus the fact roof racks are so expensive these days.

Roller,
When I bought my 2014 TI back in August I tried everything to avoid buying the trailer. After getting talked into it, I'm glad I did. I am actually more likely to use the TI because of the trailer, not less. If you are getting the Trailex, I think you'll find it easy enough to handle that you can use the trailer as a dolly. It is very light and easy to move around.

Enjoy - I am jealous of the nice new seats!

Thanks Totch I had an ordinary kayak trailer with my old AI. It did the job, but a proper AI trailer is the way to go for me this time, car topping was too much of a daunting task. I haven't had my truck long and the thought of dents and rust was enough to put me off

Good decision, Roller. Your truck will thank you in many ways.

Thanks Keith I took on board all the advice, for my circumstances it was really an easy decision

a trailer is a must now I think for all 2015 AI owners.. and this you will want to be your storage rack because you will be unable to move it solo now.. in my other thread I did a complete review of the 2015 AI in single hull mode while used for a day of offshore fishing.. a few things surprised me.. check it out.. hope it helps.. I keep coming back to the same question on this. Now that the new AI is so much bigger and heavier, why not just buy a TI and have the extra seating capacity? Put another way, what advantage does the new AI have over a TI?

About 50 lbs and 1700 US$

Also, when the Tandem truly upgrades in a yr or 2, my guess is that it, too, will increase in weight and the advantage will become greater again. It is simple evolution: things living and developing increase in size, e.g., people, cars, planes, boats, Hobie Islands, and prices.

Once the damn thing is too heavy to pick up, does another 50 pounds really matter? Sure, it's 20% cheaper, but is that what the AI is going to become - a stripped down, cheapo version of the TI?
