Hi Chumbucket, glad to see you posting here. Yes, we should get together. I'm doing a big camping trip to Pavilion at the end of the month (March) on a weekend. It is intended to get WT together to exchange stories. I'll announce it.

Keith

My most important observations at the 2015 Everglades Challenge

Nancy surveying Jim Czarnowski’s 2015 AI. I’ve pointed out a number of things here. (1) Snorkel bag with reacher sail, (2) Reacher sail, (3) Jim’s seat pad on Vantage CT seat, and (4) tightened bungee cords by knots.

Adjacent to Jim’s boat, PelicanMan has a 2013-2014 vintage AI retrofitted with a Vantage CT seat. He also has a snorkel bag with reacher sail. And, he too has tightened his front hatch bungees with knots.

Jim is underway.

Charlie Fast got this picture of the reacher sail deploying device at the top of Jim’s mast. It was labeled “Hobie.”

Jim said the reacher sail was almost ready to market.

Thanks for the update CB - sounds like you had a fun outing despite ..

Glad to hear all our Hobie friends and others in the tribe are safe and sound.

Is the Reacher sail also flown wing on wing ?

I would think so, but never having tried it, don't know.

Almost ready to market huh? As exciting as that sounds we did hear the same thing with the jib and that never came to market. Cross my fingers! ;)

I talked to jim quite a while about it on Friday. I was asked not to say too much, or post too many pics or videoes just yet. I'm pretty sure the design will go thru a few more changes before release. What i can say is they had 3 boats with the assymetric spinnaker in the race, and they appear to be real upbeat about their progress. I'm thinking it might actually be real this time. Fingers crossed

Keith, there were at least 3 AI-2's in the race as my friend Ray "QuincyBoy" was also riding one.

He was late off the beach by about half an hour, still prepping his gear, this being his first EC race. Once on the water, he spent a lot of time rescuing capsized boat's gear (about 60# worth) and returning it to shore.

He did continued on to CP1, but was so exhausted from all the rescued gear collection and pedaling upwind back to shore to drop it off. Also, at CP1 he was stuck in deep mud 100's of feet from shore coming in. He did say conditions were not bad, compared to normal sailing he has done with me here in Hawaii.

I wonder in a normal EC year if many of the capsized boats might have dropped out or become acclimated enough before conditions got to the levels they saw right at the start. Glad everyone made it through OK!

Wow! Awesome info Keith. Adding some knots to my front hatch tomorrow! Also, that reacher setup looks the business, and I can hardly wait until Hobie releases the kit (despite the expected denials from Hobie LOL).

Passwind, wing on wing, I'm sure. Jim has been doing this with spins for some time. He's really good at it.

Usually uses a notched hobie paddle as a whisker pole for the main.

Thanks for the topper info Keith, and all the exciting event news.

Yes, Jim said the jib he used last year at the EC was "ready," but the reacher is a much simpler sail. I'll venture to say this one will reach the market and sooner rather than later--with maybe a jib to follow.

Though I put one on mine, I came to the conclusion that the AI really doesn't need or want a jib. I don't use it any more. The boat has enough power upwind and reaching. It needs more power for running and broad reaching. My jib is pretty useless for those points of sail.

I like the look of the new reacher mod, but that contraption atop the mast seems like it could be a bit smaller.

I don't know about all Islands, but the ones I'm aware of had no problems with the conditions, although it was rough in the shipping channel. The low tide also presented lots of problems for people. If we were talking about FL Bay, people would be saying "the offshore winds blow all the water out of the bay." I think a similar thing happened here (although Tampa Bay has much more water) and the low tides were unusually low. Going inside down the waterway presented many problems for everyone because of sand bars, mud banks, etc. My friend, Henry Ovares, in his tandem went outside on the Gulf and was the 12th boat overall to reach Checkpoint 1. It was his first EC also. The Islands flew down the coast.

1st timers typically drop out--the stress of getting ready and the first 24-30 hrs of the EC, blows them away. Many EC vets are irritated the coast guard got involved. Still, as I have pointed out elsewhere, when you have 12 people rescued the coast guard felt they had to react.

KB, your friend QuincyBoy only got a little taste of the EC.

Yea im pretty sure I burnt my bridges with Hobie a very long time ago, every year for the last 4 or 5 yrs I make a point of stopping by and talking to jim about jibs and spinnakers (much begging and grobbling involved (lol)), I'm pretty sure when they see me walk up I'm sure their reaction is 'oh crap not this guy again' (lol). [snip]
Oh well nobody can say I haven't been trying....
