I recently bought a 1991 H18 with SX wings and have another that I will be stripping for parts next week. I plan to take all the parts off that I can fit into my van including another set of SX wings.

My question is how much interest is there or value in a single hull? I don't have a great place to store it but if it is something that would move fairly quick I could find something.

I could maybe get a mast too.

Am I crazy to not take these parts and let them go to the scrap yard?

This is my first post on the board so HI

Looking forward to learning from this forum and get into cats. I also have a 24ft mono that I weekend on.

Thanks
Tony

I don't personally need one, but there are a lot of older boats out there with delaminatimg hulls. It would be a shame to trash a perfectly good hull, especially one from the 1990's. Value would totally depend on condition, but when Hobie made a run of new hulls a few years ago, they sold for several thousand dollars a piece. I don't think you would get anywhere near that for an older hull, but at a minimum it should be worth several hundred bucks or more. All depends on condition and if there is someone in need.

Where are you located?

Is there a good Hull Id Number Decoder to get the manufacture year?

Thanks

Hello, welcome to the forum, and congrats on your new boat! Hobie 18 parts are getting tougher and tougher to come by, particularly the larger and more expensive parts. A boat from '91 is a damn good find, as most H18's were built in the 70's and 80's, with a few in the 90's and hardly any in the 2000's. Now I don't know how old the boat you're stripping is (are they both from '91???), but I'd hang on to wings, crossbars, daggerboards, rudders, rudder castings & steering assembly, tramp & sails if in good shape, blocks, traveller car, and if you have the room, the mast and hull(s). Depending on the condition of the latter two, I'd bet you could fetch from $200 to $800 for each. The thing to do would be to find some local H18 sailors and ask around if anyone wants to buy them off of you. Of course, if you're just going to scrap it otherwise, you might as well give it away (provided you find someone who wants it). At least it'd do someone some good. They'd be very costly to ship, but if in good condition, someone might want them. It's just considerably easier if you're/they're local.

Why just a port hull? What happened to the starboard? As srm pointed out, condition of the hull is key. Regardless of the age, if it's in near perfect condition, it's worth saving. If it's got a soft spot or two. or a small hole but can be repaired, it may still be worth saving. If the whole deck/side is delaminating, then it's probably junk.

What part of the country are you from?

Last two digits of the Hull I.D. number engraved on the transom of the hull indicate the year.
