Mine have all fallen off. From the times I've been out, don't really find them all that necessary. Maybe its the fact that I sail on the heavy side for crew, but have had more issues keeping the bows up than the mast.

If you are comfortable using the trap, then you may not use the hiking straps much for actual "hiking". However, they are still very useful anytime you are sitting on the boat and need to keep yourself locked in position. For example, if you're sailing downwind in a strong breeze and rough seas, having one or both feet under a hiking strap can keep you from being tossed around or sliding down the tramp and help prevent a capsize.

i recently bought a 1976 16 and the hiking straps were worn out. mounted the trampoline upside down so they were out of the way ( may not be the most proper but it works…) i was considering braiding some line with a spring link on each end and attaching it thorough a grommet for the tramp lacing. would be completely adjustable in and out and would be removable. is there any issue with connecting to the tramp through the existing grommets?
