Rigging question.

Hello, I just bought my first new "used" 16, It's my first sail boat.
I have one question I am having no luck finding the answer, (or picture) for.
Where all the cables attach to the mast at the top how critical is the placement? (I wish I had a pic of mine)
My side stay cables are at the top with my trap cables on a regular shaped clevis,
The main stay is on a elongated clevis in the bottom hole and i think the jib halyard that is an aussie set up?. Nothing is in the the top hole.
Can i move the side stay cables down with the main?
I think i need to because i have 3 shroud adjusters on the front just to reach the main stay
I have 7 hole adjusters on the side and they are moved all the way up and the threads are just barely thru the rods underneath.

I don't have a picture of it available at the moment I think my stays go through the lower hole and the trap wires to the upper hole in the mast tang. It sounds like, if you have 3 chain plates in front and you're in the top hole of a 7-hole plate at the sides, that either your rigging is not the right size, it's very loose, or it's not rigged properly. Moving to a lower hole will only give you a little more room.

First of all, don't sail the boat until you screw the anchor pins all the way into the anchor bars....then back them out a half turn so they can pivot. It is dangerous not to do so!

Now, you've got three holes in the mast tang, right? If so, attach shrouds (side stays) and fore(main)stay in the bottom hole as shown in hullflyer's pic. (Aussie or not....doesn't matter.) That should be a 5/16" shackle with a hole in the end of the pin. Use SS seizing wire through that hole to secure the pin.

Trap wires should be attached with a smaller (1/4"?) shackle using the top and middle holes....pin through the top hole and bow/hoop portion through the middle hole. This helps keep the wires/thimbles from getting all twisted and wonky when you raise/lower the mast.

If you still need more than two shroud adjusters to connect the forestay to the bridle and/or you have to be in the top hole at the bottom of the shrouds, then hullflyer's right about the rigging lengths and/or tension.

Unless u have a spinnaker everything should be attached to a single mast tang by 1 large D shackle. In the body D part put the forestay first then 1 sidestay either side. Then the front trapeze then the back trapeze either side. Then offer up to tang and inset the screw bolt.

Thanks guys, I have learned alot already just reading here. great forum, very similar to my "other" love, sledding.
I'm HOOKED on Hobie 16 sailing.

in follow up I rigged it the way "Rattle n Hum" said, and that really did help keep things straight going up and down twice, what I learned was that one shroud stay was way short causing all my troubles, when I got the mast up it was leaning to port real bad so I took it back down and compared to starboard side, then add a shroud adjuster to it and "Wala"! the mast is straight and only has one shroud adjuster on the front, NOW i can tack without almost doing a belly crawl.
