Hello, I have a 2011 Hobie Getaway that has significant cracking/damage at the point where the comptip slides into the mast. I've read an earlier post about how some cracking can happen at the joint, and that it's mostly cosmetic. Here are some pictures:

Some sailors I know feel the condition of the comptip is unsafe, and the comptip should be replaced. However, this post:

seems to suggest that this cracking might not be a safety issue.
Moving forward, if we were to replace the comptip, I'm wondering how to get the old one out. Do we need to cut it off and chip it out? I think it has been cemented in place and so I'm not sure just pulling on it will work.
Any advice or recommendations about whether or not to continue to use this would be appreciated. And, if not, what is the best way to remove the comptip. Thank you,
Steve

Fill it with thickened epoxy and repaint....good to go.

Better yet...I'd try G/Flex from West System.

Thank you for the recommendations, RobDek. Have you seen this situation with a comptip before? Has anyone ever heard of a comptip breaking from normal use? I'm wondering if someone from Hobie might have an official position on this too. I'm happy to fix it with Gflex or epoxy if it's structurally sound, but we're using it at a summer camp with children, so I want to be more cautious than usual. Thank you.

The cracking is more cosmetic than structural but it's a good idea to nip it in the bud. Yes, mine also suffered from superficial cracking at the joint.
