Surf Launch/Landing Rod Storage for NON Pro Angler

Care to share your ideas on rod storage for surf landing/launches for a NON-Pro Angler kayak (ie. Revo, Outback, Adv).

Right now, I just leave my rods in the vertical rod holders behind the Adv's seat and have floations on the rods. I haven't had a bad landing yet, but I figure that the rods might survive a roll better if they're free to float instead of being leashed to the kayak. I'm wondering if anyone has found a better storage solution for rough landings.

I looked at the Hobie rod holder kit, but it doesn't seem like it would work all that great with my Adv island.

If I'm going out, no amas, of course in heavy surf. I slide the rods into the hull thru the front hatch. Just need to give them a little bend. Of course you have to scoot forward and do it. Easy with a little practice.
Otherwise you playing with fire on a roll over in the surf, if not snapping the rod in half, you are unnecessarily beating up your equipment.

I have the hobie horizontal holders, total of two.

Other option is to use 4 piece rods and assemble/disassemble as you need.

Other quick thing, is don't leave any hooks of any style on the rods while leaving or landing. A roll over and hooks can become lodged in you.

If the surf is bad on landing we do it two diffrent ways. One time the waves and pedal like a madman and ride it all the way to the beach leave the drive in and just tuck the fins up to the hull right before landing jump out and pull up the beach. Second is turn into the waves and let them push you in and jump out and grab the bow and walk up on to beach, this is what we do when it's really bad. Both ways work well and have not flipped coming in. Came close but no problems yet. But some days we have to say it's just not worth it to go.

Many of us here in S. Florida use a milkcrate with rod holders to store stuff. This puts the rods more in the center of the kayak than off to the sides (where they will get more saltwater splashing them). I really advise leashing the rods if you are unsure about the conditions. All well and good if they float, but when you roll in the surf and have to chase down several floating items, you will get tired quickly and risk losing stuff as well.

Ouch! That is a very good suggestion.
