This is my 1985 Hobie 16 Signature Model, S/V Sarge, preparing for a float test and sea trials on Lake Livingston, TX, last weekend after a nearly year long restoration. She has been sitting in the garage for a decade and almost ended up in the trash heap. Instead, I decided to save her. Many hours of blood, sweat, and tears later... I have cleaned, repaired, or replaced every part, completed a bottom job with new gelcoat, repaired hail damage on the decks, new gelcoat and non-skid on the decks, installed a new mesh trampoline, all new standing rigging, and all new running rigging. She is my pride and joy and she sails beautifully!
S/V Sarge was named for my grandfather who taught me how to sail on Sunfish and Hobie 16's when I was young. After retiring from the USAF, he spent many years as an American Red Cross volunteer teaching small boat sailing and lifesaving classes. Sarge was his nickname given to him by his fellow Red Cross volunteers. I'm proud to say that his legacy lives on.
Thank you to all who have contributed to this forum over the years! I couldn't have done it without tapping into your wealth of knowledge and experience. And a big thanks to the great folks at
Mariner Sails in Dallas, TX, for always having exactly what I needed to complete this project and for the quality sail repairs!
Safe sailing,
Erich
