Looking for suggestions on cool places to take a TI for a month during the summer. My wife and I are mostly retired and live in Colorado but Im thinking about maybe a one month trip to some place that would be interesting taking a TI to. We would try and find some inexpensive place to stay (maybe one place for the whole month), take the TI and some bikes.. If there is a place that is interesting, what month is best to visit?

For example..

Port Townsend WA..

This is a little too close to home but I think Lake Grandby CO would be a good place to spend a month. I would probably pick August as the best month for this area.

Lake Pend Oreille Idaho (??? guess.. never been there..)

Any other suggestions..

Traverse City, MI. Lots of smallish lakes plus one really big one. They have some new kayak tours that are popping up. A brewery tour in Traverse City as well as a tour of Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore. Gorgeous country up there.

We used to spend every summer traveling around the country with kayaks on the roof and camper in tow. We often did the loop from chicago around thru michigan around the up (upper penisula) then back thru wisconsin. We would typically spend a few weeks in traverse city, plenty to do there. We even did macinaw island (but I won't do it again). The bays around traverse city are pretty safe plus lots of nice lakes, we liked Duck lake at Interlochen the most. My parents lived in lake havasu for a while but we never took our kayaks there, though I heard it is nice. I would love to do lake Mead myself.
Have fun

San Francisco!
Well actually Marin.
July.

Zillion launches, Completely consistent winds, calm in AM and blowing in the afternoon. Who doeent want to sail under the golden gate? Or sail along Tomales bay stopping to eat fresh oysters here and there.
Monterey Bay is only 2 hours, wine country 1. There's salt, the bay, and fresh water all within easy reach.
You can even hope up to tahoe - which at 22 miles x 12ish is a great circumnavigation along a water trail

Cycling is among some of the best in the country. Plenty of open roads with light traffic right out the door. Completely iconic views, and of course wine tours.

I even know of a place that is available.

You can stay at my place for free Walt.
Some of the best places in the world for a TI.
Bit of a problem to get here for you I guess :?
Cheers,

All the pictures that get posted here of Australia or South Australia always have me longing to go there..Bringing along the TI.. not so easy.. they need to put a rack on the wing of those big planes...

The options so far look very interesting (Traverse City MI and Marin county CA). Definately thinking about these.

FE mentioned Lake Havasu and I am spending the winter at Lake Havasu now - which is a good thing. In the summer it can get up over 120F - too hot for most people but fall/winter are very pleasant. I just went sailing here two days ago.. Feb is a very very nice month here. Spring is windy and not bad but by mid March and April the power boats and crowds start to return.

For Lake Havasu
Best month for an AI/TI - maybe October or November. The water is still relatively warm and generally enough days with some sort of breeze
- there is a launch at the South end of the lake where you can go up into the Bill Williams wildlife refuge
- launch on the island at Havasu, do the about four mile loop around the island and under the London bridge
- launch on the island, go south about four miles to Copper Canyon.
- get a shuttle - launch at I40 and the Colorado river and go down throgh Topock Gorge to Lake Havasu - just a little over 20 miles.
- drive 115 miles to Willow Beach Az, go up the Colorado river towards Boulder Dam, visit the hot springs (this works best with a small outboard).
- Temple bar at Lake Mead is also about 120 miles from Havasu
- Katherines Landing at Lake Mohave is about 90 miles drive and also has great desert/ mountain scenery

Lake Powell is an awesome and beautiful place to visit anytime during the summer months. There are lots of hotels that range in price, depending on how far you wish to travel at the beginning of the day for kayaking and at the end of the day for sleeping.

The lake is loaded with slot canyons to explore, may of which are narrow and have spectacular red sand stone vertical walls, blue skies and clear water, indian artifacts, etc.

It also has many large open bays for sailing, fishing is fun and everywhere.

Depending on your zest for peddling, when the wind isn't cooperating a small outboard could be handy sometimes becaue the lake is very long with many places to go, see and do things.

Bring a lunch with you each day 'cause though resturants are avaialbe in some places, there's much more lake and slot canyons than diners, stores and consessions.

By western standards, there are many other places somewhat nearby to go and see when traveling to or from Lake Powell, including the Grand Canyon, Arches, Zions, Gobblin Valley nd many more.

Yes, the Traverse City Michigan area is a nice destination. We took our AI there on vacation twice in the last 5 years. Once we stayed at The Vineyard Inn http://www.vininn.com/ in Suttons Bay and was able to cart our AI from the parking lot to the beach behind our room. It's a small enough place where I felt comfortable leaving the AI on the beach overnight with a cover on it. Nice restaurant there and it was a good area to sail though it may be expensive for a month. One other year we rented a cottage on Lake Leelanau with my sister and her family. That cottage is no longer available but there plenty of others. Lake Leelanau is a perfect lake to sail and explore.

Yeah, Lake Powell would be great. Word of caution, it can be hot in summer months. My other places out west are Yellowstone National Park (Yellowstone Lake) and nearby Jackson Lake at the base of the Tetons. If I were doing it, I would split it up. Camp in the Yellowstone Nat'l Park/Teton Nat'l Park. Take a few days off from camping and relax in West Yellowstone (funky tourist town). Maybe go up to Glacier Nat'l Park and McDonald Lake & Lake Mary. Trout fishing can be good in most of these lakes. You need to like camping and national parks for this kind of trip. Still, plenty of places to take a break from camping in these areas.

Just a thought...and have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year (with lots of fun trips!)

Keith

This wont happen this year but how about Florida with a TI on a trailer? A friend of mine seems to like it best around April or so (Port Charlotte area).. I would be with my wife so we would need to rent some place (camping for a few days is OK but not for weeks) but also want to keep the rent cost as low as possible. Best weather, least bugs, interesting areas??

The tropical zone (coconut trees) doesn't start till you get down to Naples (about an hour south), you are still in the sub-tropical zone (not enough bugs to speak of). It's pretty much summer here by April (highs mid 80's), and the daily afternoon storms don't usually start till July. Some years the gulf is in the 80's by April (we never know, all depends on the sun). I was out Saturday (Sarasota bay, just north of there) and the water temp was around 73 (probably the same in port charlette). We live up in the Sarasota/Tampa area so we haven't been to the port charlette area but have talked to several AI/TI owners who have come up here for the day. From the map the area is huge so I'm sure there are plenty of nice places to explore. We have only been as far south as stump pass.
Getting camp sites in Florida in the winter is pretty impossible, but some open up by april (the snow birds are usually gone by then (tax time).
I'm sure some locals will chime in here about cool places in the immediate area.
Hope this helps
FE
Ps: there are a lot of snow birds who rent out their beach front condos in the off season, you might want to look into that. We go up to midiera beach area (north of us) and rent beach front condos in the off season (it's kinda silly since we live here already but it's fun, we go out several times a day when we can, we just leave the boat on the beach for the day.
