Loose rivets on akas.

All but 2 of the rivets on the akas are very loose, creating a lot of movement. Solutions???
Re-rivet all of them or put in a vertical bolt??

Which year and model?

Early TI's had this problem but Hobie seemed to have fixed it by gluing during assembly.

Whoooa! Sounds like that may deserve a "Design Flaw 2" post. BTW, I was going to use "warrant" in place of "deserve." But, that would read, "...may warrant a...." Do you get it?

Still, when you think about it, this problem ought to be covered by a warranty.

I just did that work after consulting other messages with instructions and photos in this forum. if you search for the loose rivets problem you will find it, inclusing the suggestion about which kind of glue to use.
the real problems, in fact, is the lack of the glue. I thought they solved the problems since the 2013 models (I have a 2011). maybe they will give u a new aka under warranty. do u notice this problem in all 4 akas?

I'm new here and this is my first post, so I hope this helps.

I bought my 2015 AI in August 2015, and have already had the rivets areas loosen a little, so I drilled a hole through the AKA arm and secured it with a 316 Stainless nut and bolt.

Now there is no more movement and or possibility of it separating.

For the cost of 4 rivets and time to drill them and rivet them, you think that Hobie would just bolt them and be done.

I think you should contact Hobie and if they don't solve it you should think to make the same work i did with the glue and replace the rivets. You could also decide to keep it as they are. I dont know what can happen with time. i decided to fix.

If you have a lose rivet please post a picture of the aka joint area close ups - trying to understand if there's no epoxy or what the issue is. If you can't post a photo just e mail them to me directly - thanks.

There is quite a bit of movement, and it appears to have no epoxy.

I had the same issue on all but one aka on my 2014 TI. It appeared that they had used glue, just very little. I bought Hobie's repair kit (part 81412001) that comes with the rivets and epoxy, repaired the akas, and they have been holding up good so far.

Yeah, that looks extremely bad, Hogman. Certainly is a warranty repair or replacement.

Anyone having this issue - the repair is very easy - just order the kit 81412001 from any dealer - it's free and will tighten that all back up. We've given the details to our engineers and they're communicating with the vendor that builds our aka bars overseas to tighten up that issue. Thanks for the feedback - sorry about the trouble. Luckily, it's a very simple repair.

since it was very difficult for me to remove the rivets I suggest to give/get also informations about the best way/tools to use in order to remove them. U will save time and avoid to scratch the akas.

Yes have to agree, loose rivets are difficult to remove. I used a precision point vice grip to hold them while drilling.
