I am 65+ years old and my favorite fishing hole is quite a distance from the launch point. I am wondering if a MinnKota or Motorguide 30lb thrust (smallest that they make that I can find) will fit through the mirage drive slot. Has anyone tried this?

I have a Minnkotta on the back of my TI it is a 55lb thrust. This unit would not fit through the Mirage drive. However the Minnkota shaft is fairly easy to remove and if you did this you could push it through the drive and mount it. Since the engine is mounted on the bottom of the minnkotta I don't think the 30# thrust would fit directly through so you would have to remove and reassemble the shaft. You will also add 70-90lbs to your boat. The problem is it is too much work to do every outing so it would be there to stay which would probably cause trailering problems.

I would recommend a mount on the tail and a battery in the front to balance it off. Check your weight, electric gets heavy and expensive. You may want to consider a 30lb gas motor if you have a distance of over 5 miles. The minnkotta has been wonderful to have on the boat.

An 18 to 24 lb thrust motor will push the boat as fast as a 30, or a 55 for that matter. The pitch on most motor props can't take advantage of the additional thrust when pushing something as light as a kayak. All they'll do is drain your battery more quickly.

Read my posts on DYI "through-the-mirage-hole" trolling setup.

$100 for Watersnake trolling motor (T18 or T14), about 7# of weight
~$200 for 40AH lithium battery + charger on Ebay, about 14#. Look for U1-12RT

Those batteries look pretty cool, how did you adapt the connectors for the motor and for charging?
