I know I have seen a trailer that can hold 6 catamarans other it on here before, but the links are broken to the photos. I think its owned by a new England area hobie fleet. Was talking with a friend, and wanted to show some picts, but I can't find anything on here or anywhere else.

The trailer in the photos was custom-built for Hobie Class Division 11 in 2007. The original plan was to be able to carry 10 boats (6 fully assembled, 4 knocked down), but there's not enough storage space for all the bits and pieces in the two huge sailboxes that are on the bottom level. The most I've ever seen on it is 8.

The thing is a beast to tow and was involved in a scary accident in late 2008 on the way home from the Hobie 16 North Americans in Iowa. It was being towed by a Ford Expedition when the rig hydroplaned, jack-knifed and took everyone for a ride in the mud on the shoulder. Nobody was hurt, but it was close (the bow of one boat came through the side window of the truck). It took a while to get fixed and then people were skittish about towing it - deservedly so.

Division 11 sold it to Rob a few years ago and he tows it behind a big-ass diesel pickup. Fleet 204 uses it to travel to big regattas, especially the ones in Florida this time of year.

I think the best way to do it after reading this would be to convert an old school bus. Cut off everything behind the 2nd row of seats, leaving just the chassis and build up from there.

When I first saw this I thought they were stacked on each other, but now I see that there is some support system for each boat in there. How does it all work? I figured to load boats the support system would have to be on the outside?

Been a few years since I've seen the "BIG" trailer, but I believe there is quite a bit of assembly and disassembly of the racks that had to be done to load it, i.e. you put the lower boat on, then assemble the next tier of racks, then put the next boat on, etc. Then you install all the cross bracing. Plus there was a lot of disassembly of the actual boats that had to be done. It takes hours to load the thing.

This is the reason why the division got rid of it. It was a decent concept but ended up not really being practical because it turned out to be a huge amount of work to load, a PITA to tow, and an inconvenience for whomever had to store it. Ultimately, it's easier to just load up a couple double or triple stacks on conventional trailers for long trips.

Matt
.
The trailer that was in the crash was a completely different trailer. Rob had the one pictured made after. (The pic is from Pensecola NA's this past fall) The one pictured is alot easier to load and unload. If you look closely you'll see that there are no racks to remove and all the boats slide inside the support system.

Down at Tradewinds this year, they had the big trailer loaded in just a little longer than it took us to load Herbs triple.
