titles,titles and more titles...

so the hobbie i bought didn't have a title. the owner bought the boat 12 years ago and brought me a title that he had that he thought went to the boat. well turns out the goober has had the wrong title all this time. it goes to a 72 not a 74. I live in Texas so does anybody know if its simple enough to obtain a new lost title? they don't even know if the previous owner is even still alive. so i have come across another cat with the same issues. but the owner swears when he bought the boat he had put it in his name again around 12 years ago with this boat.

They have the year wrong on my title also, but the HIN is correct. When I pointed this out to the DMV clerk he said that it didn't matter as long as the HIN was correct they would be able to identify the boat was mine. I've gone with that for the last 8 years. No worries.

alright. bought my second hobie and man am i stoked about it. not only did the sell go very well the seller found the title at the last minute. This cat will be ready to sail in no time. The decks of the hulls are gonna get a fresh coat of paint and in order to be more cost efficient i am just gonna buff out the bottoms of the hulls.

In many states, boats and things like that (RV's etc.) get titled as the year they're initially sold, not necessarily when they were manufactured. My '82 turbo is titled as a '83. Nobody but me has ever even noticed!

Kayaks and canoes in Illinois do not require registration. The only way to get a title is to register it. So, a store receipt is the only paperwork we get here.

jim-doty. why would i regret painting my hobie?

so my hobie has a vinyl deck. its in great shape and we cleaned it realy good. but i am not satisfied with it. to me it needs to be more whiter. what is the best solution (chemicals) for this and what do i use to make sure it stays in great shape?

I have never seen a paint job that looks as good as polished gelcoat (and I have seen a few). Paint is not nearly as durable as gelcoat. Every painted boat I have ever seen has chips missing within a few years and if you want to try to fix that, you really have a job on your hands.

Unless you just won't be happy until your boat is some wild and crazy color, better to wet sand, buff, and polish what you have....

Regarding the title, you need to contact your local department of natural resources, or whichever handles the titles and ask them your question. In SC, to recover title for a boat for which the seller did not furnish one, the new owner must advertise the boat as lost or stolen for a period of time, and then submit some forms for the new registration. Also in SC, boats under a certain size and boats without a motor are exempt from the more onerous requirements. It might be as easy as registering the boat. Good luck!

I intentionally got my Hobie PA registration when I first got it, even though I did not need to. Many have even asked me why I registered my yak. The reason I went with the full registration when u first got it was because I was able to get a title also. It was the only way to get a title for a new yak. Otherwise, all I've got is a store receipt. These plastic yaks are no different than going to target and buying a bike or big wheel. It's just a "toy". To use it on water in Illinois, all you need is a water use sticker. Same would apply to an inflatable. My boat registration is now good for 3 years. Even if I don't renew, and instead just get a water use sticker (cheaper), I've at least got the title now. Having the title will be beneficial when selling it, to show I actually own it. It will be useful if it is stolen and recovered also.
