Anyone know what happened to Island Mutant? Way out front in the beginning, now he is off the tracking map? I was really looking forward to seeing him do well with all of his modifications. I hope he is OK.

Update at 4:42 PM. Tuesday, late afternoon

MutantIsland has quit and is being picked up in Chokoloskee. PenquinMan (Jim Czarnowski) is moving in the back bays south of Chokoloskee. Clearly, he is going for a Gator Tooth (inside route, including Nightmare.)) He is still about 20 mi south of Chokoloskee. Interestingly, many competitors, when they have done the EC a couple times, they look for ways to make it more difficult. Jim has picked a good one.

Standard Tandems (16) are led by Triman, who is stopped in Shark River. He is about 35 mi ahead of the next closest TI. The next closest TIs: LuckyMe, OldGuy, SuperTramp, and CaptGnarly, all between Rabbit Key and Pavilion Key. They are all doing about 5 kn.

Standard AIs (2) of Yakmandu & NoWhereMan nearing Everglades City/Chokoloskee.

Thanks for the updates. It's fun watching their progress, if you can't be there.

Interesting, looks like the 4 TIs between Rabbit and Pavilion are packing it in on PAV for the night. Great place to camp. We were there 2 weeks ago. I wonder if any of them plans a stealth launch to break away from the others. Hmmm...

Ditto, much appreciated. And the drone video (whoever did that) was outstanding. Have also been 'watching' at http://watertribe.com What a great event!

Wow! Triman is "suddenly" down at Flamingo (CP3). Maybe he is going to try to get across FL bay tonight because tomorrow, the winds will be strong and on competitor's nose. They are only moderately lighter tonight.

Edit: At 12:39 AM, Triman is still in Flamingo. PenquinMan is off Broad River and into the entrance of Nightmare, but he seems to be stopped and "camped" on the water. Frankly, camping on the water in Nightmare would be a little too spooky for me--there are serious crocodiles in the area.

Thanks from me also Keith. It is great to be able to follow the fleet of Hobies from afar. That video was awesome too!

I would love to find out what stopped Mutantisland.

Jim Czarnowski (PenquinMan) got out early this morning to make his way through Nightmare. Unfortunately, he has made a wrong turn and is probably stuck trying to figure what happened and how to extricate himself from his mess. He may have to reverse his pedals (that is what I would do), and track his way back out. The mangrove tunnels he is in are tight. When the tide comes in it is difficult to see any channels at all. I don't see how he made the wrong turn, but.... It is extremely important that his GPS is working and that it laid down a track as he made his wrong turn. He could follow it back out. Of course, it is possible, that he has not realized he made a wrong turn--scary. I'm going to put a note on the WaterTribe forum to alert them that he may be in trouble. I'm sure there are sea kayakers in the area.

Maybe he is Canadian like me, got down in the glades, saw the clouds of mosqeetos laying in wait for his blood, shined his flashlight over the water at night and it shined back (thousands of gator and crock eyes), so he turned around and went back (I know I would). Just kidding, I know I know, I have a phobia about the area and need help (lol).

Actually my original theory was he possibly broke his rudder rendering it inoperable, he attempted to sail by paddle steering upwind against the 15mph head winds from the east and couldn't make headway so he turned around and sailed the only way he could (downwind). This was my original theory, because that has happened to me off of Key West far offshore, I snapped a rudder off hitting a coralhead and tried to paddle stear into the 15mph wind and couldn't make any headway, but I could paddle steer 70-80 degrees or more off the wind. I got back ok but not till way after dark, ever since then I have never gone far offshore without an emergency outboard on the boat (scared the begeezeez out of me). Ok thats my other phobia (getting blown out to sea and not being able to get back), maybe I just need therapy (lol).
I don't know the area he was in at all (because I'm canadian (lol)), but it's possible there are no roads or civilization at all where he was and his closest place to pull out and get picked up was back at cp2 (since he couldn't make his way back to cp3 with a broken rudder)
It was just a theory trying to reason out in my mind what the heck he was doin.
I'm sure were going to hear the real story soon, then again I liked the Zika virus theory, and now he has a really tiny head. We will know for sure if another triber finds a hat floating in the water.

Fusioneng--nightmare, sail, roads?? You need to do this trip so you have a better understanding!! Here is a picture of Nightmare:

Image

Sometimes, especially at the beginning of the camping season (November), there are whole trees which have fallen across Nightmare. You pull you boat up over those. At some point, the park service or someone brings a saw in and cuts them away.

Jim has not moved in the last 2 hours, so he may have run out of any navigable water.
