New length for shrouds ?

Have the shrouds length change over the years. ?

I have received new set of shrouds and trapezee cables for my H 16 which is a 1980 or 82 and they are different form the old ones which had thimbles on both ends.

Im out of country, back in Peru were we have finished refurbshing owr H16t the problem is that i cant send this cables back because courier cost makes to costly.

Have any suggestion in order to use this new shrouds and trapezee cables. My original cables were 240 -242" long and the trapezee cables seems to be way out of meassure.

Yes the shroud lengths are different, not sure which year that changed but you need all new wires on the boat. They are built the same way with a swaged thimble on each end. Where did you order these from, these are basic questions we ask when selling H16 shrouds, most people think it is just because we want to sell a total rig kit but most of us are in the biz of helping the sport more than making money, but we still gotta eat!

The shroud lengths must have changed after 1994. I just replaced all the standing rigging on my '94 and could only attach my shrouds at the second hole on the adjuster plate vs. the fourth hole with the old set.

I thought only the forestay (Longer) and jib cut changed to alow more past rake?

Did they also shorten the side stays?

The wires for the Hobie 16 have changed several times now. This has been due to the use of more mast rake. Shrouds got shorter... forestays got longer.

Early change was in 1982. Shrouds got shorter, forestay longer. We also changed the mast step casting to accommodate more rake at that time. Same changes for the H14.

In April of 1995 we shortened the shrouds to the Sport 17 length just to simplify the inventory. The change was minimal but reduced the available adjustment and slack in the forestay. We started using an extra 10 hole adjuster in the forestay system to add some length there.

We still use the shorter shroud length of 18' 11", but have gone to all new forestay configurations. The Aussie halyard systems became standard after one of the 16 Worlds. We then played with the forestay length and finally made it long enough to get rid of the extra 10 hole adjuster in the latest configuration.

I knew about the forestay and mast nase change in 82. And being the owner of a new 05 I'm very aware of the long forestay, in fact I think it is TOO long. As it seem like it would be impossible to sail with the sail folded over on the tramp, and the back of the boom dragging in the water (If I had no jib tension at all)..

Shorter now...

We did make another adjustment in the last couple of years. There was a period where the forestay was way too long. There are people who sail the 16 loose and raked back soooo far that the boom drags on the crossbar. Light crews in very high wind. We saw that at a Worlds in New Caledonia. Now the forestay is a completely seperate wire from the jib halyard pigtail and block.

Does this mean the "Aussie" kit will be changed?

I'd like to get one but I just had a new forestay made last year and I don't need another one - just the pigtail. Murray's kit is like this but I'd rather get a Hobie instead if possible.

For the 2006 boats?

I would be interested in checking out the new system.

I changed the drawing of it in the catalog last year. The 80660000 kit is now as new boats are made. The forestay is a seperate wire from the pigtail and block. The halyard line is a Dyneema type line from Sampson. The forestay is 18' 8" according to the part description.
