2nd time I had to replace the idler cable ... stretched such that it fell of the idler pulley.
1st failure was idler cable snapped in half.
Anybody else have this experience?

Cables and chains do wear... and fail. Same as on bicycles.

How long did this last / how many miles?

Both cables lasted about 18 months...maybe a 100 trips each. Don't track miles. Use my Evolve motor for there & back.
