Hobie PA14 Kayak Cover - water proof or just resistant?

I have had the kayak out side but under my new Hobie kayak cover for the last few rainy days. When I took it off this morning, I was surprised to see the amount of water that got thru it and into the kayak. Is this cover waterproof or just resistant? I guess I am going to have to seam seal it and spray with water proofing.

That cover is mostly for solar protection, which is your biggest enemy. I think that kayak was meant for the water.

Okay, that is a Darn Good Point!

But I left my rods, blackpak, etc in the kayak. The tackle bin was half full of water. I was hoping to have the cover on and be able to crack the hatches, and hopefully air the inside out. I know it is not made of Gortex, but still...

I had the wife make a custom fit cover out of Sunbrella material to keep the water out for this reason. If you know someone that can cut out a pattern and sew you should look at having a really good cover made.

I settled on using Costco heavy-duty tarp as cover. $8 or so. NICEST tarp money can buy.

Fold it length-wise for double the protection. Attach some tarp eyelets. Done. This is completely water-tight, is wide enough to cover the sides of the yak so that sun doesn't get there. Likewise, long enough to cover front and rear with some overlap. It will last 2 seasons, at least here under NJ harsh sun.

If tarp leaks, water will accumulate on the deck and it WILL find its way inside
