I just upgraded my 2010 Outback for a 2016 Outback and am looking for suggestions regarding fish finders. I am looking at Lowrance hook 4 and hook 5 and would appreciate recommendations for choosing a size. Is the Hook 5 overkill for mounting on my outback (I intend to mount it on the Right side rail to be easily accessible from the seat.

Thank you in advance for your responses

CJ

I've got a Helix 5 on mine and am wondering the same thing on going to a 7 inch Lowrance. I was just considering starting a new thread asking about a 7 inch FF on an outback, so I hope you get several responses to this to help me decide. I would definitely go 5 over the 4 is it were me, but I'm thinking a 7 inch might be too large and in the way. I'm also sorry I didn't pop for the GPS unit(I forgot my handheld), because I definitely needed it this weekend. So my next will have this and I want Navionics, which I think a 5 might be too small for this feature. hope some will give some pics.

Get the 5". I had a 5" and saw my friends 7" so naturally I got the 7 when my 5" graph let me down for the last time.

I posted this on another forum, might make a new purchase cheaper for some of you.

Lowrance 5 year upgrade program, if you have an older faulty non warranty unit around and it's no older than 5 years since manufacture/purchase. You can get half off a brand new up to date unit by calling Navico. I just did with an old non working Elite 5 unit. They even allowed me to choose the Elite-7 TI w/ HDI transducer. $325, 6 month warranty, purchased another 3 years for $96. No receipt necessary, have to send in the old head unit. They have you pay and choose a new model on your initial call/claim. SweeT DEAL, thanks Navico.

Bigger is always better, but it won't catch you fish. Go with whatever your comfortable with or none at all.

That's an awesome deal CR. I never used a graph till I starts bass fishing. It sure does help to find the fish with good electronics. The rest is up to the fisherman. When I find structure with fish I won't leave till I find out what they want.

I bought the Lowrance Elite-4 Chirp with GPS (same unit as the Hook 4) for my Jackson Cuda 12. Space was at a minimum and honestly I almost never used it on that kayak. Since upgrading to the PA14, I find myself using my FF ALL the time. I can now cover so much more water, easily, that I have found the GPS/Navionics + invaluable, the down scan amazing, the regular sonar great for knowing the basics. I have also found that the 4" is just to small when in split screen mode, which i find myself using all the time. (Navionics on top, down scan on bottom of the screen.) I am going to upgrade to the 7 Ti with total scan. I really want side scan because I am sick of having Ranger Bass Boats swoop in on my spots run the bank and pick bass up right in front of me that they found using side scan.

I also like the wireless capabilities of the 7 Ti, the touch screen, and being able to easily add waypoints on my iPad or iPhone, mirror the display, etc. Plus it will work with my existing HDI transducer in the Lowrance ready holder, and i can use the total scan on an arm when I want to use Side Scan.

If you get the totalscan transducer, it's all inclusive. You don't need a separate HDI one. There is only one (black) 9 pin input for transducer on the Elite TI's. If you have an older blue 7 pin HDI transducer you will need the adapter chord. Not cheap either. $50 to $60.
Before I return to CR, I'll be picking up a second unit with the totalscan. Down here you need two of everything so you can keep going in the season.

My suggestion is; always buy the biggest screen you are comfortable paying for. I run the Lowrance Elite 7Ti with TotalScan. The TotalScan is big, so I came up with my own mount to place in the Lowrance Ready scupper hole. There will be a mount coming out from BerleyPro with in the next couple weeks.

If you buy the Lowrance Elite 5/7 Ti or one the Hook 4/5 Series you can purchase the Navionics+ card at the same time for only $99...until the end of July.
