I am inheriting my Dad's Hobie 16 and I have never sailed. He claims it was a model from the 70s. Sailing seems like an amazing past time. My first thoughts are taking the Hobie to a local shop here in Michigan to be inspected or updated, although it doesn't look that bad. Then begin learning the sailing process, my Dad is in his 70s. Any thoughts would be appreciated, thank you so much.

I would be happy to help get you in contact with another Michigan H16 or catamaran sailor. I hope to see your boat in the CRAM fleet one day.

Does your Dad remember when the standing rigging was last replaced? From what I read on here, as well as physically inspecting it for any visible issues, standing rigging is something that's wise to replace based on age.

Where abouts are you in Michigan? There are a bunch of us in SE Mich and also out near Grand Rapids. There is a Notice of Race for this weekend in SE Mich near Monroe, just north of Toledo, OH. If you can make it out, don't plan to race (yet!) and bring the boat, there will be plenty of H16 guys there and you will see the fun we have. Unfortunately, I can't be there this weekend.

Get info at www.cramracing.com

Hope to see you soon! We are all sailing OLD H16's, and there has been a sudden resurgence. 2 weeks ago we had 7 of us racing. You know over time that as we get more experience and better, someone will start the arms race and buy a newer boat, but until then it is a blast for a group of low investment racers. There is a very wide variety of skill levels, including many beginners. We are all trying to grow the fleet and you will find us VERY helpful and willing donate older used parts if needed to get you on the water.
