I bought the Hobie 18 tuning & performance guide from murray's

Someones got it online. I have that pdf saved on my phone to reference for when I need that extra tuning edge. Which at the moment is all the time. I also just have all the charts chopped into one reference page. I used to have it laminated and tied to the tramp lacing when I was learning but it came loose and is floating around the ocean somewhere now.

Where were you four years ago!?

That's a pretty great summary of the adjustments and information. There's more to the tuning manual if you wanted to get into the nuts and bolts of it (rudder rake, batten shaping, etc), but that's a little more high-level stuff, for the really obsessive tinkerer. The "This old Hobie" articles in Hobie Hotline also have a treasure trove of information when it comes to tune-ups and repairs (I'm looking at you, rudder system).

So I guess I'd modify my earlier statement. The information in the tuning manual is useful as a starting point when you're first learning the boat, but over a year or two you should pretty easily develop a "feel" for how much rotation/outhaul/mast rake/diamond wire tension you need. I still adjust most of those things regularly (except mast spreaders... why?), but I seldom refer back to the manual. Mast rake and diamond wire tension are easily the most useful reference points from the manual, and the ones I still refer back to on occasion. I rarely change my batten tension, rig tension and mast rake, however. I found a happy medium that I am comfortable with, based on the tuning manual, and I keep it there! lol
