Today was the second day I had my Hook4 out on the water. Three separate times the until started to read a depth between 1 and 2 ft when I know I was in deeper water. Each time I turned the unit off and on, which worked until the next fail. This is my first FF so I'm still learning as I go. The connections were tight. The first time out it worked without a problem. Any ideas on what might cause this problem.

My ff did the very same thing when my Lowrance ready transducer mount became filled with pebbles and silt. Might try cleaning it out, hopefully that's the problem.

You have the transducer mounted in the Lowrance ready transducer mount under the kayak? Not glued to the inside of the hull? I have had ZERO issue with my Elite 4 Chirp which is last years version of the Hook 4. Besides making sure you don't have any debris in the scupper mount, make sure you have a small gap between the mounting plate and the bottom of the transducer. Also, I would check your firmware on the unit...even if brand new to you...it might have an older version of their firmware on it. I just upgraded mine last week. It is a very simple process of dropping the newer firmware file on a Micro SD card, putting it in the unit, and turning it on. Takes only a few minutes. I regularly do the same for my Navionics + maps to get the newest Navionics and user submitted data.

Yes, it is mounted underneath. I did "drop" the kyak a few feet while removing it from the car last week, so maybe the transducer shifted a bit. I'll check it. Getting the yak on top of the car is no problem, but getting it back down has been a real adventure a few times. Thanks for the info on the firmware. Do I download it from a Lowrance website ?

You might want to invest in a trailer! It has saved my back and makes launching and retrieval a pleasure...and I take my PA14 out about 10 times a week!

Here is the link for the Hook 4 update...just came out on July 6th.

I run in to the same issue every now and then when it thinks bottom is where the downrigger ball is set at. Happens usually only when the water clarity is bad and the downrigger is set below 20 feet.

I don't have a place to store a trailer. I'm thinking about installing a hitch on my SUV and getting a T bar extension so I can load it into the back. That will work for local trips.

I just bought an old farm house with a two kayak garage. Kind of sad that my SUV sits outside, but my kayaks have a nice dry garage! I know a lot of guys that use the T-Bar and it works great for them. Lifting it up 3-4 feet no problem, 5-6 feet over your head onto the roof, not so much. I stopped car topping when I loaded my kayak on top, from the back, and it shot across the front and slid down the hood.

Did you get a chance to update the Hook? Wanting to see how it is performing now.

Confirm: A) The Lowrance ready cavity is free of debris, B) You have a small gap between the bottom of the transducer and the Lowrance Ready plate, and C) You have downloaded the software updates for your Hook 4.

If problems persist, contact Lowrance at 1-800-628-4487.

I can't log-in at this site. I also reseated the transducer and it worked fine the last time out.

John, that is interesting. I just checked back on the Lowrance site, and it now says no updates available for the Hook-4. Wondering if they had some problems with that last update and pulled it.
