I remember the first time I beach sailed. It was on a Sunfish, we pushed the boat out thru the waves, jumped in, pushed the centerboard down & angled into the wind & off we went. No down haul, out haul, travelers, rake, etc,,very simple, but it was no where fun as a Hobie 16. As soon as we pulled up the centerboard for shallow water, it would fall over !! That was 30 yrs ago, anyway to make my Hobie 16 that simple ?? just dreaming,,

Sounds like you're craving a Hobie Wave. It's about as simple it gets.

Your Hobie should be that simple. I go sailing everytime with the rake at the same place, outhaul/downhaul/rig tension all about the same, gib travellers either out or in, main traveller nearly in or all the way out. I guess if you're racing things could be more complicated but for recreational sailing I try to keep things simple.

Some of my notes (can't remember which one right now) says that don't fiddle with your boat unless something is majorly wrong with it. The notes say a well sailed boat will beat a well fiddled boat anyday (or words to that effect).

I'm not widely sailed but I've never had as much fun sailing as on my H16. After a good day sailing I cannot stop grinning from ear to ear for several days afterwards.

However, it sounds like you've got many years on me as far as sailing experience goes so I'll shut my trap about now!

Anthony

The 16 is simple! When I sailed my 14 all the time I wanted something more complicated but now that I have a bigger more complicated boat I am kinda wishing I had the 14 ready to go somedays. I mean the bigger boat is great but I miss 10 minutes set ups.

There is a point in your life you want things simple again, My son has a 20' tournament bass boat with 200 HP motor, (my bass boat is just a 17') it does 75MPH, like fishing on a boat dock !! He has a F250 4WD to pull it around. 3 or 4 batteries to charge, 40 gal tank. But somedays I miss the canoe fishing on a creek !! Like sailing, somedays you want to out run everybody, other days (more than others) you want to pull the sail up & relax & ease down the beach,
But there is nothing like hearing that 200 HP fly down the river, blowing past other boats, waving at them as you fly by,,,,

Easy there, lets not get to happy about a boat with a motor that weighs more than any hobie!
