Hobie Outback Trailering

Hello all!

Right now I keep my 2 outbacks on the trailer hull side up. This creates a bit of a headache for me. I would like to keep my hobies rigged and ready for fishing at a moments notice, but rigging and de-rigging (is that a word?) the boats is a pain...

My trailer has 2 crossbars and what I am thinking is to run pvc the length of trailer like people do for the pro anglers...

I know its best to store on the gunnels but is it ok to store on pvc rails?

When I researched this, it seems several people were against this due to hull deformation. I guess it depends on how warm it is in your location. In Arizona, it is clearly an issue and not a chance I was willing to take. Some things you can look into are putting additional support next to PVC pipes if that is the way you want to go, such as saddles. this way you distribute the weight.

I also understand your frustration with setup and takedown. We have 4 kayaks and have gotten this down to 20-30 minutes. Just have to get organized. For example duffle bags for drives and rod holders, a separate bag for seats and oars.

If the PVC is sized and mounted so that it conforms to the hull shape, then your hull shouldn't deform - the PVC will be the item that deforms.

Generally, it's leaving a kayak on top of narrow cradles or supports that run perpendicular to the hull that cause hull deformation.

One thing I would advise, however, is that you loosen your trailering straps and remove any heavy items from the kayak when not actually on the way to or from your fishing location.
