I recently purchased a Hobie 16 from an online auction and I am trying to decode the hull number. The last 4 digits don't make sense from what I have found. They are m77i ... m for the month (13th month?) 77 for 1977 but what does the "i" stand for? And it's definitely a capital letter "i"

Close, but not quite. Model year starts in August of the year prior, so the OP's boat was built in May of '77.

A boat built in September of '77 would have M78B as the last four characters.
