I am thinking of buying a Hobie 16 from a Boy Scout club in Oregon but the boat does not have paperwork. Do I have to register it in the state of WA? I know it is 16'7" and on the DOL website it says boats under 16' do not have to be registered so I am assuming I do. Does anyone on have a Hobie 16 in WA state and do you have your boat registered? Thanks for the help, and I did do a search for this info and couldn't find it.

Hey there, I race a 16 in division 4 and am also a police officer. I have actually bought 2 16's this year. So with the registration, the boat itself does not need to be registered because it does not meet the size and horsepower requirements to required to be registered. The trailer on the other hand is just the same as any other trailer and needs to be registered. You still have the option to register the boat if you want, I registered mine because if the boat is going to be on any federal waterways (Snake river, in my neck of the wood) federal regulations require to boat to be registered. Hope that helps

Here in Alabama it is the opposite, the boat has to be registered, but the trailer doesn't have to be registered and doesn't require to be tagged. This only applies to boat trailers. Utility trailers are required to have a tag. I would assume that because the boat is already registered and is pulled on its dedicated trailer, then the trailer doesn't require a tag. I would imagine that if a boat trailer was also used a a makeshift utility trailer, then it too would require a tag.
