Evan - another option is to disassemble your boat & just ship it over to N.Z. or Australia without the comp tip mast. Buy just the all aluminum mast over there & use it as long as you're working there. When you return to the USA some day you can sell your aluminum mast over there and just ship the rest of your boat back here & go back to using your comp-tip mast.
Jim C. Dawe & others have given you some great options for shipping to check out. We all wish you the best of luck in getting the job in N.Z. and figuring our what to do about your boat.
Richard

Update: I moved to Auckland about 2 months ago. Love the city, hate the housing prices. Have looked at a few hobies around here. Some good boats, and some not. No boats that I would consider race and travel ready for sale currently though. Would like to expand my search to Australian boats. So my question is... does anybody have a clue how much it would cost (preferrably in NZD) to ship a boat from Oz to Auckland? Looks like there are quite a few boats available in Perth as well. Wondering if shipping from Perth would be more than shipping from Sydney/Melbourne?

Welcome to the lands Down Under. No idea on shipping cost from Aus to NZ, but Im sure Perth to Auckland would be more expensive that Sydney/Melbourne to Auckland. Pretty sure its further from Sydney to Perth than it is from Sydney to Auckland haha, bloody big country Australia. You should be able to find a very nice H16 around Sydney or Melbourne. Good luck with your hunt.

So, what did you do with your Hobie? Did you end up selling it or store it until your possible return back to the states?

I ended up selling it to a guy who sails out of a lake in Tyler, TX. He doesn't race, but his daughter sails at the Tx A&M sailing club, and knew a few of my friends back from University. I don't expect the guy to put much time into it, but I can see him probably giving it to his daughter within a few years, maybe as a graduation present. Sold it for $4000, which isn't what I wanted, but to not have to deal with it anymore and have less things tying me down back at home, it was the best choice.

I don't intend on coming back to the US to live longer term at this point. Although life is more expensive here, it's better here as well than Texas. So, any "possible returns" let's just consider out of the picture :)
