My boat has 2 orginal "butt bucket" style harnesses, blue with big yellow flying H on the backs. Anyhoo, we set the boat up in the back yard yesterday and I was going to show my son how the harness worked. He put it on and it fit him fine but I don't understand how the center "crotch" strap part works. These harnesses have never been used and I kind of wanted to give them a try this week, could someone explain how you wear these things?
Thanks.

If the hook plate is square with slots for straps, then the crotch strap goes through the bottom slot and then you insert a 3/8" rod through one of the slots in the strap (multiple slots allow for size adjustments). A piece of rudder pin or wooden dowel works fine as the rod. I used to tape the rod in place (duct tape) to keep it from slipping out.

Ahhh, okay I see now. The crotch strap on these have multiple adjustment settings. In the tool kit that came with the boat, there are two nylon/plastic short rods. I wondered what they were for. They probably were used with the harnesses. Thanks.

Yep, that's what the plastic rods are for. I have one of those old diapers and prefer it for casual daysailing when I don't think I'll be on the wire much. It kinda sucks for long periods on the wire though.
