I have an 86 H16 with a comp tip mast. Apparently the mast was not cut short enough when they comptip was installed by 4.25 inches. I really dont want to break the mast apart if possible.
Is there any problems with cutting the comptip down at the top and then reinstalling the comptip mast head the halyard hook?

Does anyone have any other suggestion for getting the mast to the correct size?

Thanks

While I am not super familiar with the 16, I would wonder if you cut the mast at the other end and then reinstall the base. If your comptip is the same as an 18 comptip then it is tapered at the top.

Actually I wouldnt be able to since Ive got to shorten the distance beween the top and the slot in the mast for the downhaul. As of now I can only get it in about .25 inch of the goosneck in.

Now that I typed and submitted that idea it occoured to me that you can't do that as the rigging and boom would be effected. I guess the first question is rather or not the comptip is tapered. If it is I would try cutting the mast and then removing the cut piece from the comptip and then reepoxing back to the mast.

The Comptip is not tapered so I would have to break apart the mast then cut it, and next reinsert the comptip itself. I would be alot easier to just top it off and not mess with breaking the thing apart if its a way that wouldnt cause any problems.

But I do appreciate the help!!

Yep, that should work. Cut the top of the tip off.

Much easier than removing and reinstalling the CompTip.

Definitely do not cut the bottom of the mast. That would really change a lot of important dimensions. Forestay and shroud wires being the biggest issue.

There is a tech sheet on the support pages about CompTip installation. Gives the proper cut position. You could check that and lop off the top of the Tip at the same distance as the incorrect cut point of your mast.

How long is the aluminum extrusion from the bottom to the break between the comptip? Don't include the mast base.

How far does the comptip go into the aluminum? Would it be better to cut just below the comptip then grind a slot down on whats left on the comptip to get that free. It's probably more than 4 1/2" you've got to spare. Another option possibly.

Here are the specs on the mast. The comptip is 93 inches long(not including the part with the rollers) The aluminum section is 224 inches. (not including mast base)

317 inches total..

Does this sound correct or too long?

With the comptip mast head it will jump the length 3 inches to 320.

Apparently this mast had the original comptip with screws on the side. Hobie changed to a longer comptip at some point. If the original was damaged then someone could have possibly replaced it with a new one that is longer without knowing there was a change.

Can someone confirm this comptip change, and size of the old comptip?

I know Hobie says the cut on the mast should be 219.75 inches. Or 18' 3 3/4 " My aluminum mast is at 224 inches without the base.

Thanks

Fender,

You're exactly right. 1986 was the first year for the compt-tip and the original was shorter with the bolt, we had one. That original comp-tip mast is about an hour away from here, if Matt or Matt doesn't give you the answer, email me. I'll call Quinn to measure it for you.

I can't confirm the length of the old comptip vs new, but it sounds like the best way to fix your problem corectly is to pull the comptip and shave a few inches off of the extrusion and reinstall. If you definitely have the newer stgyle comptip.

Thanks Matt, I definately have the newer comptip and the old aluminum mast length for old comptip which puts me appx 4.25 inches over.

Now to fix it. Arghhh!!!!

Matt, Is there any issues with Hobie Class on just cuttiing the comptip off at the top? It would put back to specs for the old comptip that it would have originally had.
