Mast and stepping pin

Ok,

I am kinda new to the Hobie 16 deal....Back in the day of my teen years I owned a 14. The 14's mast swiveled in the base. There was no pivot pin to step the mast...you just lifted it up and went to town.. The 16 however, has the pivot with the pin....for steping the mast....once the mast is up, it appears that it should be able to rotate in the base as the 14 did. However, with the pivot still pinned this is impossible. My question is....do you un pin the pivot so that the mast can rotate in the base? or do you leave it pinned? I would assume you would un pin the mast so it was free to turn. Any replies would be great. Looking forward to putting in in a couple weeks.

yes. definitely remove the pin. i've ruined one of my hinges already by forgetting this step.

Very Good....This is what I figured. IF the pin I have is currently bent, does anyone have any good ideas where I can pick up a replacement, or something equal.

Any proper size clevis pin will work. I've seen screwdrivers used in a pinch.

Murray's Marine has a hinge replacement kit for about 14 dollars that includes the hinge, pin and spring. The stainless in the replacement hinge is much more robust than the Hobie hinge. When I rake my mast all the way back there is interference with the top of the hinge, so I had to file some of the hinge for better clearance so that the mast can rotate unhindered.

Unfortunately Mdgann you quoted the price for the hinge only with no pins. The complete kit from M's, is $25. The Hobie part #is 21380001 for $19.95

I actually prefer the screwdriver. When it gets dropped in the sand its real easy to spot. I remove my hinge entirely from the boat. As someone said before when the mast is raked back the base can hit it. I've destroyed a couple capsizing as well. Boat goes turtle, hinge swings up (or down in this upside down case), and when the boat comes back up it gets mangled

Don't you use the spring which gently holds the hinge down?

I've never seen the spring. None of my boats have had it.

Hobie has not used a spring in the step link kit since the late 80's. I modified the link at that time to make it tougher and not bend as easily. Pretty bullet proof now.
