Hobie Dragoon Project

I recently bought a Hobie Dragoon. This is boat was Made by Hobie Europe and imported to the US in 2001. It was initially bought with the idea of starting a "youth fleet". As far as I know there is only a handful of Dragoons in the US.
The boat I got may have been sailed a few times back "in the day" and then it sat at Wind Toys until I was silly enough to pick it up. I am hoping this boat will be a Wave on steroids.
I want to document my work on it and share with the Hobie community. The repairs this boat needs are minimal and I want to do some upgrades too.

The hulls are oxidized from neglect:


Some rubbing compound and elbow grease is bringing the luster back to the hulls; I've got more polishing and waxing to do:


This boat is and early model and it shares the mast step with the Hobie 14. I am not a fan of the "old" step and I will be updating it to the Hobie 17 dolphin striker and ball and the Wave's mast base. I am waiting for parts to arrive in a week or two.

Mr Miller was kind enough to post the dimensions of the H17 striker and I think this will work perfectly.

nice, I looked at that boat a couple times, before ending up with the 14 turbo. Where do you plan to sail it? I'm hoping to make it to the Fleet 20 gathering at Commanche in August.

I sail out of Redwood City, Pillar Point or Oyster Point depending on the wind.

I am getting my parts to change the dolphin striker and mast base today. Does anyone have tips on changing the striker?

I am in need of some advice now. I am adding a hobie 17 striker post and it uses a spacer sleeve in the front crossbar. How does this spacer sleeve sit in the cross bar? Does it sit inside the bar or go all the way through the bar?

Here is a pic of the 17 post next to the stock post. There is a slight diameter difference as the 17 post is smaller than the Dragoon post. Depending on how the spacer is installed this may take care of the diameter difference as the hole needs to be enlarged for the spacer.


The wave mast base fits perfectly! I wont rivet it in place until I've got the striker post sorted!

With a little notch, got the spacer installed and the 17 striker post is in.

I've got the boat all set up. I need a jib sheet and jib halyard. I also have some work to do on the trailer. I hope to sail it next weekend. Spinnaker set up will come later.

I finally got the Dragoon on the water. This thing is like a turbo Wave and it was ripping across the water in 18-22mph winds. I was able to trap out and fly a hull while on the wire. The boat was easy to handle at the dock and on the water. I still need to make a few tweaks to some of the rigging.
Now to get the spinnaker set-up on the boat....
I'll take some video on one of my next outings.

Yeah, the boat is fully loaded. It's like a Hobie 18 on a Hobie 14 foot print. It's truly what I wanted my old Wave to be. It has a boom with out-haul, 4:1 down-haul, the furling jib sheets to the front beam withadjustable the jib cars, it has double trapeze, and the spinnaker. I set it up a little different than stock; I did not use the furling drum for the jib, its and I only set a single trapeze.

So the rudders are a pain to deal with as they are essentially one piece with the cross bar and I am looking for a quick disconnect to remove the cross bar from at least one of the rudders if not both. I came across. Hobie part 1953. Does anyone know if I can adapt this kit to the Dragoon? https://www.murrays.com/product/07-1953/ the kit does claim to be universal.
