I am in the process of replacing my comptip, so the mast tang has been removed. There was some plastic/rubber type of material in between the mast and the tang, sort of like a gasket. I assume it was there to try to reduce dissimilar metal corrosion. It did a so-so job. I would like to replace this gasket material with new.

Anyone know what it is?

Can I get it from a Hobie dealer (or somewhere else)?

Is there something better to use?

Jim

Thanks, Matt.

Does that stuff dry to almost a clear plastic type substance?

Sorry for the size of the photo - I fixed it.

Lanocote is a grease-like cream that goes between the dissimilar materials to prevent corrosion. There are other similar products (Tef-Gel) that work just as well.

The adhesive-backed plastic film that Hobie uses in production is probably polyester. You can get sheets of it from McMaster-Carr (https://www.mcmaster.com/#standard-adhe ... m/=16iud61). Its advantages in production are low cost, quick application and no clean-up.

The grease-like creams do a better job than the plastic film - and you can use them all over the boat where dissimilar metals come in contact.

+1 on Tef-Gel.

I would coat the entire tang surface and the rivets so that when you pull the rivets you get some squeeze out all around. Then wipe off the excess.

This is just the info i needed to do the same chore. Looking for the non-corrosive product to put in between rivet casing and tang. Tef gel looks right.

Does it need reapplication at any point?

It should not need to be re-applied unless you take the tang off. Just put a healthy coating on the mating surface of the tang and on the rivet shanks. Then pull the rivets and excess should squeeze out. Wipe away the excess and you’re done.

Thanks. I removed a broken comp tip and the tang as well with it's rivets. I'm going to coat the mast as well as the back of the tang before putting it on.
