Comp-tip flex....is it OK?

I just bought a used, mid-80s Hobie 16. The mast has a comp tip, and I have noticed that where the comp-tip attaches to the aluminum part of the mast there is a little bit of flex (i.e. if you push the comp tip up or down it hinges slightly to where it is attached). Is this flex normal? Should I be worried about the comp tip breaking off while sailing or hoisting the sail?

I appreciate any information.

Likely this is not properly glued in place. I suspect that this is the original retrofit tip with a screw set that passes through it? Remove, coat with epoxy inside the alum and outside the tip and re-install. Be sure you can hold in alignment while it cures.

I use automotive bondo. Many use other types of epoxy, but be sure they cure HARD... the stiffness is more important than the holding strength.

Yep... as I guessed. That is a "bolt-in" version of the Comptip... not glued. Just remove and Glue and it will be fine.
