Squarehead main, telltale locations

Got a spanky new Whirlwind Pentex squarehead main and dacron jib I'm just rigging. Any suggestions on telltale location?

I use three in the body of the sail that you can see here:


There are also three on the leech of the sail, up high. Those are the ones that get used the most, since they tell you if you're oversheeted or not.

That double heads'l setup looks nice. What do you call that? Hooter, screacher? Or just a genny?
BTW. My first squarehead. Any tips on tuning the top angled batten?

ALWAYS take it out and put it in the 2 batten pocket OR you will loose it. Found that out the hard way.

That is a standard issue Hobie Tiger (F18) spinnaker.

The Tiger main comes with both a hard (stiff) and a soft (not-so-soft) top batten, ostensibly for heavy/light crews. I can't tell the difference.

Batten tension doesn't seem to make much difference, either. Just tie them in snug. The mainsheet, downhaul, outhaul and mast pre-bend control the sail shape (pretty much in that order from greatest effect to least).

Assuming you have foam core battens, be very careful when you roll up the sail that they are straight. If they "spiral" when you roll the sail, they can break. Very $$$.
