Going in circles

I’m a newbie and have been consumed with the advice in this forum , greatly appreciated
I just picked up my first Hobie Cat, Its a 1980 16’ needs a lot of clean up work
Reading all the post on rudder/tiller adjustments but still missing directional, < > Are my rudder extensions just bent to hell or are they supposed to have a bend?
Are they marked port or stbd?, Right now the rudders do not line up and the extensions point outward )_(

Also any recommendation on a good book for rigging Hobie 16’, need lots of pictures to compare.
And a good place to buy parts online? No Boating store close by and the Hobie dealer is a good 2 hour away [/b]

Welcome to the joys of learning how to rig and sail a Hobie. To answer your questions:

1. You likely have the rudders attached to the boat incorrectly. There is a port and starboard, and you can tell by a slight bend in the tiller of each towards the center of the boat when they are attached.

2. Once you put the rudders on properly you can adjust the alignment from the tiller cross bar by loosening the nut on the end cap and sliding the end cap to where you want it. Read about it in the FAQ section.

3. Books: At least have the Hobie 16 Assembly Manual, which can be downloaded from Hobie. Also, contact your closest dealer and have a Hobie catalog mailed to you, this way you know the names and part numbers of the boat and can easily order them from the dealer. Another on-line parts dealer is www.murrays.com

In a haste to rig my old 18, I put the rudders on backwards one time and left the beach. It's quite a surprise when you get floating and the boat doesn't steer. As John said, there is a left and a right.

For parts call the one of these guys that it closest to you and establish a relationship. All of us can ship parts but you'll be better off in the long run as far as support for your product to have your local dealer do it. Also, see if there is a local fleet that you could hook up with. One outing with a fleet will teach you a ton! Have fun with your boat!

The closest Hobie fleet to you is Fleet 276. We are based in SE Michigan and usually sail out of Metro Beach on Lake St. Clair. Actualy, I found some marking on the inside of the upper and lower casting. LUR RUR for left upper rudder and right upper rudder LLR and RLR for the loser castings. I think I was putting the stiffing disks in them so you might have to remove the blade to find them.

I found the marks Banzilla directed me to and they are swapped.
The guy I bought it from never took it off the trailer. The rudders where assembled in the trailers storage box, so I wonder how the folks he bought it from 4 years ago ever sailed it? Maybe that is why they sold it?
Ordered new tiller hardware connection kit and Cams and will put the whole thing back together when parts arrive.
