Just purchased a 1973 vintage Hobie 14. Everything is pristine and has been well stored, and gently enjoyed however the owner lost (?) the rudders. I'm thinking of fabricating a pair, does anyone one know whether a pattern for cutting is available? Thanks!

Hi. I have reciently bought one that has wooden rudders that do their Job but it gets tricky to make them stay lifted as they are pretty heavy.
I would recomend you to buy a plastic pair.

Thanks for the tip P.A. I was able to borrow a rudder from a friend’s H16 to use as a pattern from which I made wooden replicas that work satisfactorily. I’ll probably fabricate another pair as backups, just in case! Keeping my eyes on the “used” want ads in case a pair of EPO rudders show up… can’t justify the cost of new ones for my little restoration project.

Have you considered making your own EPO style blades instead of wood? You would have to shape the foam with a template, calipers and sandpaper. If you use polyurethane foam then you could use polyester boat type resin with the fiberglass. If you use Styrofoam you would have to use epoxy resin with the glass. There are videos on YT which are more like demonstrations of building rudders than tutorials with tips and tricks. It's the same technology as building surf boards, so there's that, too.
