Removing carpet on sidebar?

My old 1983 has carpet glued to the sidebar that needs to be replaced. Any thoughts on the best way to remove it?

A little chemical solvent and a putty knife

If that's not fast enough...sandpaper, you are going to cover it back with new, right?

Yes, I'll be covering it back up w/ either carpet or neoprene. Which do you recommend?

I just tore off all of my old anti-slip from the rails of my '81 of which I'm restoring. (Looks like were in the same boat!....sorry, couldn't resist the pun) I then pressure washed the rails real good. most of the old stuff shot right off except a smooth thin black layer of old glue. I've been debating on sanding and chemicals to remove the old glue but at the same time thinking if that old glue needs so much work to remove why not just re-glue on top of it?

I bought the H-16 neoprene rail kit (Page 11 in the '07-'08 Hobie catalog) for my '81. Price $48.00 plus S&H. I ordered that along with $250 in other things from Backyard Boats in Woodbridge VA. I placed the order with them last THURSDAY and it was at my door on FRIDAY. INCREDIBLE!!!

I ripped off what I could, then used a putty knife with acetone to get the residual crud off. What the knife and acetone didn't get I sanded with an orbital sander to a smooth(er) surface.

I like Hobie's neoprene kit over the rail rug. Read this thread for more opinions:
