Wires are measured "Pin to Pin". That is from the inner surface of the thimble that the clevis or shackle pin ride against.

In 1987 the shrouds were about an inch longer than they are now.

The wire specs can be found on the Hobie Class Association site:

www.hca-na.org click Resources then Technical Information

http://www.hcana.hobieclass.com/default ... F10815%2F0

I found it listed as "Line" lengths under the 16.

http://www.hcana.hobieclass.com/default.asp?id=2169

But... they list the shroud wires as 19' 1/4"

They are currently 18' 11" (since 1995)

Thanks Miller...

So then the forestay shoud be 17' 6" with a 6" pigtail
and the shrouds 18' 11"??

Are these measured from center of thimble to center of thimble or from the tip of each thimble??

That is against the pin bearing surface inside the thimble. Stretch out the wire using two "nails" (I use a couple Phillips head drivers, one clamped in a vise or stuck shaft down in a hole on your work table pinning one end of the wire) inside the thimbles. Measure nail to nail with the wire pulled tight.

thanks again Matt...

Any adjustment for mast rake will be done with the chainplates right??

Should the rig on the H16 be tight without the jib??

Meaning the shrouds and forestay tight with no slack to the mast.
Or should it be loose and then the tension be applied with the jib halyard?

Yes, mast rake is adjusted at the shroud adjusters.

The 16 rig tension is VERY loose without the jib up. Once the jib is hoisted and tensioned, the forestay goes limp by several inches. You do not want tension on the forestay while sailing, so all rig tension is on the jib luff wire. If the jib is loose and the foresaty takes any load, the boat will not point as the jib luff will bow to leeward.

Ok then the forestay should be pinned only by "hand" once the shrouds are set and the mast has been raised forward?

Will it be too loose if the mast is banging side to side in the wind while beached and no sails up?

In other words how can I "feel" the position where the forestay pin should go in the chainplate?

For mast up storage...keep the mast from banging around by hooking the end of a bungee through the mast step hole at the base, pull it tight over the front crossbar and hook off to the dolphin striker and/or post. Make sure there is enough tension to keep the mast solidly rotated against a stop to either side. Tie off trapeze lines at the rear corner casting. This will keep your rig relatively quiet.
