Sprocket wallowed out

Hit underwater obstructions enough times and the hole in sprocket where the mast attaches will be deformed.

When the hole is no longer "tight" to the mast, it's possible for the mast to come loose even though the set screw is in contact. Instantly dead in the water with a hanging mast and flipper.

It appears that the fix is replacement of the sprocket which leads to questions:

Where do I get them?
How much do they cost?
Is this a common problem?
Are there upgraded replacements that are tougher?
Other than not hitting anything, what can be done to minimize this problem?

You can check to make sure the set screw is tight, I find that its not hitting things as much as using the drive with the mast loose that wallows out the hole. Please let me now if you have any other questions.

I just replaced a sprocket on my 2007 Outback. It appeared that the seam at the molding had failed and split apart. I did get a new sprocket from my dealer (Kayakfishingstuff.com) but was a little annoyed that I had to spend 30 minutes replacing the defective part.

If your caught out on the water when this happens a couple of things you can do.

1. Assuming the chain operates on the sprocket ok pull the fin & it's mast and come in on one fin.

2. I carry some plumber's tape. Back out the set screw a few turns. Wrap the head of the mast with tape. After you have wrapped the tip so it just gets in the hole,continue wrapping with a tapper so when you insert the mast it starts to jam the last 1/8-1/4 inch. Retighten the set screw. I don't guarantee on how long this will last. Depends on how enlarged the mast hole has become.

I agree with Brad that the likely culprit is pedaling with a loose set screw, not necessarily hitting obstructions...although that could cause damage to the sprocket too...

Replacing the sprocket is no big deal, rather easy, but as reported, it does take some time, maybe 30 mins to replace.
