The black racer rudders were introduced about the same time as the white racer rudders (early '90's) to fill in the gap for a high performance rudder when Hobie Cat lost the ability to make the original EPO's.
They are fiberglass with a black gel coat finish. There's nothing really special about them. They are a bit thinner and heavier than the original EPO's. The gel coat is significantly softer than the finish on EPO's and scratches / chips easily.
(The original EPO's were made by O'brien Skis, another company owned by Coleman in the late '80's. When Coleman sold Hobie Cat in late 1988, the original EPO's were no longer made. The original EPO's needed a lot of trailing edge work done to eliminate the hum that they were famous for. The new EPO's don't have that problem.)
