Assuming you are referring to the diamond wire turnbuckle.
Cat masts are tall and thin. They often need extra support. The diamond wires are there to prevent (sideways) bending of the mast, which could result in the mast snapping. The adjustment of the turnbuckles allow for more or less bend in the mast, that is, a flatter or fuller mainsail. Lots of debate on this one, BTW.
If a turnbuckle were to let go, sheet out the main to release any excess strain, and only sail on that tack where the wind is blowing on the same side as the 'good' turnbuckle. Figured out how to sail backwards yet?
So, for the price of a few bucks and a visit to your friendly Hobie dealer, do yourself a favour, and sail safe. Another winter maintenance project?
