advantages of a comptip

hi im pretty new to hobie sailing i got 1 summer under my belt. i have seen lots of chatter about comptips and just wondering what the advantages are. im currently running an all aluminum mast. thanx for any info

1) You probably won't fry yourself if you run into a powerline with the mast up. It happens more often than you might think.
2) It's faster in heavy air - the Comptip is more flexible than aluminum, so the top of the mast acts like a huge shock absorber in the gusts.
3) It's required for class racing.

ok so it does improve the performace of the boat . only in heavy air? im not to worried about power lines the 3 places i take the the boat are ok. i dont know of any hobie fleets in victoria. so im racing the boat out of my local yacht club they set up a multihull div. but its still phrf my 16 has a rating of 65

Hobie wants to charge you ~$490 (list) plus shipping now and when they instituted the program they were giving them away? Recent post of one needing replacement on an '84 boat (which was a retrofit to begin with) Race your boat and have fun. If you get good you may want to find a newer boat.

This was no charge when Coleman (used to own Hobie Cat) was running the retrofit program, for about 15 years. The free program was discontinued by Coleman about 7 years ago.

thanks for all the info my curriosity has ben satisfied . im not gonna be cutin this mast. i want to get this boat cleaned up as use it for learning and gettin good then ill buy a new boat. well thats the plan anyways

I would find it very hard to sell my 1981 H16. It has the original all aluminum mast too. Yeah, I can safely say we may very well end up with a few of these boats around.
The Comp Tip may be fiberglass or some kind of composite but isn't the STAINLESS STEEL haylyard still running (or in a bad situation...conducting) down the front of the mast? I would also have a hard time cutting a perfectly good mast for alterations.

If you buy an FXone the mast is all aluminum, and its class legal!

so what sparked the need to make changes to 16's rig and add the comp tip? are they that great of a thing?
