Good last day at the lake.... :(

Well,

I have decided the boats have to be taken apart this week and the work begin on them. We had a nice last day today! The wind was light but we still had a nice little race between the two of us.

All you Hobie guys will be happy to hear that my friend Lance on the Hobie 14 actually won today....granted I gave him a 10 minute lead on an hour race but still he beat me around the course by about 20 seconds. It only took us all summer to work out the correct lead for our course, but I figure finishing within 20 seconds of each other for the last race of the season was pretty good.

Sorry about the boat that must not be named in the photo, but i had to put both my boats in the picture. If anyone has questions about how to retro fit a spinnaker, i have answers. As you can see my 5.2 now has an I17 spin on it.

I got the (censored) kicked outta me by a 14 at our holloween regatta. Portsmouth sucks balls. i.e. Fast boat, slow sailor.

Yeah, at the beginning of the summer Lance was always way way behind because he had always been crew and had never picked up on some of the things involved in driving.

But now that darn 14 is pesky! At one of the club races this summer in light air I was chasing a F28 trimaran all of one race and managed to catch him at the leeward mark because he had new crew on board, but as I rounded the mark I finally looked behind me and not but 20 feet behind me was Lance on the 14. Talk about getting killed once handicap was calculated, he only finished about 1 minute behind me and about 10 seconds behing the F28.

Ever since then I have made sure to pay alot more attention to Lance on the 14, and sure enough it is always very very close between the two of us. And like i said his boat is very old and has very very blown out sails but he always manages to make it go fast.

I love stories like that, Its not always the go fast toys you have but what you can do with what you have that can make all the difference. Especially with sailing as a lot of small ways you handle the sheets or the tiller can make such a difference.

It is a long drive up there for me, it take a good 35 minutes to get there instead of the 10 to thunderbird.

My season is over beacause I have extensive amounts of work to do on my boat including riping the top decks off the Nacra and strenghting bulkheads and stringers so it can handle the extra loads of the spin.

Come next spring I am going to start traveling around more to regattas, and would love it if some of you Hobie Point guys would start to. I know you all are not racers but it can really be a good time.

The sad part of all this is that I was on the golf course watching Gordon and Alan sailing on Sunday. I must be turning into an old man.
Vernon, regatta season starts early next year...Lawton, Kansas City, and OKC will be the first sites. Either find a Hobie to race or help us with chase. The Hobie Point guys have already offered some much needed assistance with the OKC Daggerless Regatta, which Lance needs to race the 14.

I will definently be willing to help with the chase boat or anything else you need, just get ahold of me closer to time.

As for the 14, she might be let go soon, Lance and I want to have the same boat and I have a few leads on 5.2's cheap so we are looking into that. But if she is still ours one of use will be racing I am sure. Both of us have caught the racing bug this year so expect to see us travelling around quite a bit next year.

Oh, and I just found out I have at least one more day at the lake this year on my boat. My dad is going to be in town and wants a ride this coming weekend so we are going to go out for an hour or two.

Gree- It's a bit of a haul, but there was a 5.2 on CL recently in my area. I can't find the flippin' post anymore though.

Is daggerless going to be in Lawrence again? That was sure nice for us northern folk. I thought I had heard it was just going to be a regular regatta as well. 20's and such, perhaps a FXone?

The Daggerless Regatta is an OKC regatta that had to be transplanted to Lawrence, KS due to a lack of water in Lake Hefner. With the lake back to normal depths, we are back in OKC. However, the Kansas City Hobie fleet, after a successful hosting of the Daggerless on Lake Clinton will be holding a regular Hobie regatta tentatively scheduled for April 26-27...and yes your FX-One will be welcome to race. I will be trying to talk the two Wichita FX-Ones to join us.

Kick ass! I'll actually be able to race my boat. Not just sail around with the 20's.
