Great job Karl . . . both sailing and filming.

Cool video, I would love to see the boat in action. Maybe sometime next summer I will head north to some regatta and you will head south and maybe just maybe I can take a ride on that thing!

I'll be in Lawrence KS in the end of April 08'. I might show up a day early just to get some sailing in. Chances are I won't get it into the water before then.

Is that for a regatta? If so what regatta? This coming season I plan to travel alot more for racing, so I will probably drive up if it is for a race.

The Division 14 racing schedule should be finalized by the next Hobie Hotline.

Well, I will not be looking for Hobie regattas most likely. Open races are the one's I will be looking for. But I might travel to a few Hobie races to help out or crew if someone needs it.

I am working on posting some open regattas in South Texas. We will also have some open regattas located between Wichita and Lake Hefner with the CSSA.

hobieokc,

Posting the open events is progressive thinking that needs to be commended. Catamaran racing is in such a precarious situation at this time, advertising all multi-hull events can only help. This allows the Hobie OD racer a "free" event if you will, another venue to hone their skills.

gree,

Make it to a Hobie sanctioned event, whether sailing the 14, as a volunteer, or only observing...just make it. :D

I believe that increasing the Hobie presence @ open regattas can only help inform others (read infidels, lol) as to the quality of the boat and Hobie competitors. We may not be the fastest, nor as glamorous as some of the newer tech boats, but we still have a good number of competitive boats.
One-design is still my preferred type of competing, but any experience I can get racing other boats is appreciated.

We have a large open regatta here in MN. This past summer they only had two boats that weren't made by Hobie Cat. I don't know this for sure, but I think they had around 30-35 boats.

There will be a bunch of 14s at Lake Clinton in 08, as there was like 15 last year. Its a prelude to the 14 NAC in Clear Lake later in the summer, so Gree, if you want to actually race other 14s, that would be the place to do it.
If you want to race open portsmouth, I'll race you any day on my 14 as it is a killer in corrected time sailing.
If you want to race of 5.2s, well, I've never actually seen one, so I don't know what to tell you.

How much longer does it take to rig the FX compared to say, an H16...?

assuming stock rigging on both boats, etc...

The first time? Better have some time. If I were to just go to the lake and not rig the spin I could be ready to roll (float) in less than 20min I bet. The spinnaker takes me a while. Mostly because I haven't done it enough to get a good system down for rigging it. I'm going to set up my trailer so I can leave the spin pole on the boat as well.

Right now I strip everything off of the boat. and wrap up everything. I think I'm going to put a bag over the bottom of the mast while trailering and just leave everything loose. The downhaul and the mast rotator. It will be a couple less things to un-do, and re-do every time I rig.

I take my rudders off when I trailer that adds a couple of minutes.

Right now it takes a little over an hour being easily distracted with other sailors around. For a reference I would spend at dead minumum 30 mins rigging my 16. I'm also very "particular" ie anal-retentive/severe OCD when it comes to my boat.

I really hope that the open regattas can get posted with all the HObie one's also.

I will definently try and come to a few Hobie regattas even if it is just to volunteer. I doubt I will find a fleet of 5.2's anywhere. That is why I added the spin and am buying a square top sail.

Gree- come up to the Lawrence regatta next year and take the boat for a spin. Anyone who wants to take it for a sail is welcome to do so. I'll bring the ski and follow along should you get into trouble.
