QUIZ: I left two blanks in the last paragraph. What do you think they are?

Skipper states that the boat had been involved in an accident several weeks prior and probably took on water making it impossible to right. Skipper and crew were wearing PFDs and wetsuits. There were no ___X___ and no means of _____X_____ on board. Boat was scuttled in the Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary with no oil, fuel, or blackwater on board.[/quote]

1) Sex toys
2) Means of getting wasted

Sorry, could't resist.

But it IS California right?

Sorry again. :P

There's nothing wrong with paying $600 for an H16, and nothing wrong w/ buying it from craigslist. Trashing the guy's boat for what he paid, and where he got it was pretty lame.

Not everybody can afford to blow nine grand on a new one...

Here's what I said:

Quote:
Here's the scenerio: Newish skipper, $600 boat from craigslist and not totally prepared. The more experienced of us should help these types of sailors out.

I think you took it the wrong way. I was simply saying, the $600 Hobie needs a few upgrades to be safe. I was calling on the more experienced sailors to help the guys just starting out in the sport that buy the $600 Hobie.

Absolutely, there's nothing at all wrong with $600 or craigslist. I bought 8 Hobies off of cragslist this year, mostly for less than $600. So if there is something wrong with either of those things---I'm in trouble. :D

So, I talked to the coasties today as they were dragging in a V-15 that lost it's rig, (Yet another reminder not to use Quick Pins on shrouds!!!) and asked them if the 16 ever turned up.

They were getting reports from fisherman all week of the boat's position and issued several Pan Pans with new coordinance. The boat got stuck in the kelp bed '7miles south and 4 miles east' of it's original position. (I was about 6 miles off by the way.) Vessel assist went out and towed it in upside down.

I'm still getting what happened next details. Let's just say towing boats upside down at 12 knots puts a little strain on the hardware. Vessel Assist got the salvage rights and are trying to sell it back to the guy for over $2000.

What is required and what should be carried are two different things. If I remember correctly: Open sailboats less than 26' are NOT required to carry visual distress signals. Also, vessels less than 65' are not required to carry marine radios. I am not disputing the importance of these items.

Also, why were the Coasties pissed? Is this not part of their job? I am in the Fire Department and deal with idiots every shift (I am not calling this guy an idiot). We operate the marine division for the County (middle Chesapeake Bay). It's no fun going out at night with high winds and heavy seas but I don't get pissed (OK, it actually is fun) that's why I am there. I wonder what charges they are considering.

I agree with carrying all the gear mentioned, one last item to be carried an EPRIB. I have one and hope I never have to use it. Okay in this case it may be more expensive than the boat. But I want to be found. The question I have for everyone, has any one seen an PFD designed and approved to carry this gear on you. Flares, Radio, GPS-Eprib?

Don't know about a PFD but I use a "Sports (hiking) Fanny-Pack." Works for me.

Hobie should design a life jacket with hook for a radio and a bad ass flare gun holster. People will take cat sailing a lot more serious when they see some dude walking to his Hobie strapped with radios and flare guns

A low slung holster and crossed bandoleers with spare flares. We don't need no steenkin' badges! Sorry, just had to add that

http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/List_of_misquotations

Spent too much time here the other day and happend across this

* "'We don't need no steenking badges!" - Bandit in The Treasure of the Sierra Madre
o The original quote is "Badges? We ain't got no badges! We don't need no badges. I don't have to show you any stinkin' badges!"
o This quote is actually from the film Blazing Saddles, in an obvious spoof of the original source.
+ When the newly recruited Mexican Bandits are presented badges for their participation in the upcoming raid on the town of Rock Ridge, the leader responds with: "Badges? We don't need no stinking badges."
o This is also quoted in the Weird Al Yankovic film UHF, with 'badges' replaced with 'badgers'.

And also spoofed in Troop Beverly Hills with "Patches? We don't need no stinking patches."

When looking for a PFD to carry my VHF in, I found the Extrasport Retroglide Sabre PFD. It's got room to spare, but I don't know about holsters and bandoleers
