I have the same sails as aschaffter with the # 90275.

My H16 is from April (D), 1987.

Aschaffter: do u know from what year is that sail color combination and its name?

Yeah, I was guessing with the 24" measurement.

It's not a lot of difference from the heavy air setting.

A few suggestions:
1) When you get more rake, the beckets on your main blocks will start to interfere with the ability to go block-to-block. Install an eyestrap above the cleat and tie the end of the mainsheet there. Don't use a bowline, just put the line through the strap and tie a figure-eight knot. Cut the beckets off.

The lower block, a H2613 40 MM Carbo ratchet, is temporary (Ebay cheapo). The top block is an H2641, also a 40 MM Carbo and an Ebay deal, which I had planned to keep anyway after filing off the becket as you suggest (turns it into a 2640.) I am torn between replacing the lower 2613 with a Harken 2629 57 MM Carbo Ratchamatic w/eyestrap on cam or the 194 with the selectable Hexaratchet. I wish they made a Ratchamatic or the Hexaratchet 40 MM Carbo; I really like the smaller size. The 2613 is a full-time ratchet.

2) On the jib, do the same thing with the end of the jib sheet. Put the line between the becket and the pulley and tie a stopper knot. That will eliminate 2" of stack up.

Good idea.

3) Look closely at my jib clew picture. The shackle uses two holes in the clew plate. The bow goes through one and the pin goes through the other. If you replace the stock blocks with Harken Micro Blocks, that will eliminate another 1 1/2" of stack up in the jib sheet.

I will try that. I was also looking at smaller Harkens today.

Is that a boom vang? (blue line). Otherwise known as a "crew decapitation device"? We haven't used those in about 25 years. That's why the new boats don't come with the fittings anymore.

No, that is just a dangling trap rig that is not connected to the bungee. :D

That's a real purty boat, though. I always liked the Prism pattern.

Thanks. It is an '86 I got this Spring. It was in very good shape. I've been looking for a set of "Cat Fever" as a spare. I really like those best, better than even "Tequila Sunrise." Amazing how many people have "Rainbow", "Cat Fever," etc. sails and think or claim they are the "Tequila Sunrise" sails.

My boat is an '86. I am not sure what years Hobie sold the Prism. My sail pattern is the "White Prism" with obviously white background. I know there was a "Blue Prism" with light/powder blue where the white is, and I believe I have seen pics of a "Yellow Prism."

Yesterday, in 20 knot winds I finally managed to pitchpole my 16. From what my buddy told me from watching from his 18 it was pretty classic. Sailing hard upwind to port, solo, trapped out, heading into a shallow inlet when all of a sudden I looked to the leward bow and saw it stuffing into the water. I tried my best to let the main out but it was too late as the stern rose up and I lost my balance. I went for a pretty wild ride all the way to the front of the forestay. It really wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, it kind of happened in slow motion to me. It was a little scary being drug underwater while the boat came over on top of me but other than that everything was fine. The best part about it was that the water was only chest deep so we were able to walk the mast up to right her. I should have been trapped out on the stern instead of the back of the tramp, lesson learned.

In an odd way it kind of felt like an accomplishment, like when the training wheels come off of your first bicycle or something. But now that I know what it's like I think I'll be a little less timid to push her hard.

Now I can go back and read the article in the hotline (I can't remember what event) where it instructed those who havent pitchpoled to read no further, June issue I think.

You're right Abbman, the first pitchpole (like the first capsize) is like a special accomplishment. Once you have righted the boat and stop laughing about it, you think, "oh, that wasn't so bad" and then proceed to sail the boat harder than you were before. And try and learn a thing or two so that you don't pitchpole so readily next time!
