Karl, Years ago Fritz and I ran a regatta called the Gold Coast 100. It started in St Joseph MI and went along the shore to Holland and the next day to Muskegon. Some people loved it, others would never do it again. It only ran one year due to ground logistics (beaches to use). :x

The key to any long distance cruise is the right weather. You almost have to watch the weather and be able to go on a moments notice. "Many plan, few do" :o

I keep my boat in Muskegon but don't do a lot of distance crusing due to the availability of "ground crew".

BTW It would take me 3.5 hours to Chicago & 6 to Milwaukee. I don't know where to start over in IL. but may know where to end up in MI.

Just find a park with a beach. Set the boat up, leave. By the time someone gets pissy we'd be long gone. I'd think we'd want to leave from wisconsin somewhere. There's a ferry somewhere in there to cross, I've heard its a little spendy with a trailer, but who the hell wants to drive through chicago proper or pay all the flippin' tolls.

Start at Port Washington, Wisconsin. It's 78 miles to Muskegon, beach to beach.

Google Earth is so awesome.

SS Badger from Manotowoc to Ludington MI. Its not horrible price wise to send a car and trailer over on the ferry, so you sail across, and double stack back on the ferry.
www.ssbadger.com I was thinking about this a year or two ago to go to Catfight in MI. My wife wanted to go on a cruise..........

Oh yea, BTW, have you guys ever heard the song "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald"? Yea, that takes place on the Great Lakes.

Yikes. That would be about $210 To take a truck and trailer one way.

Yea, but what is 12 hours in a car worth and double stacking your Frenchy boat and an 18? You can sit on the deck of the Badger all the way back and sip Mojitos and recant your near death experience to all the wide eyed tourists, taking a short cut to Mackanac Isle. You'd be in the same league as Evil Kenevil to those people. Hero worship for sure.

Don Quioxte meets Chris Columbus.

Wanm water and oceans beaches, thats whats missing here.

I like Chris's idea of sailing off the beach in California for a distance sail better.

Hey, I have my family already talked into a CA trip for spring break in 09. Got my eye on a house in Sunset Beach for a weekly rental (my old neighborhood) and spend a couple of days on Catalina (momma and little guy and daughter have to take the ferry over while me and Xander sail)
Now I just gotta get lined up with the usual guys that sail over. I think the timing is pretty good from what they usually do (endish of March)
We got PLENTY of time to get this put together.

If you are planning this early it could become a reallity. I know that this entire summer comming up is allready scheduled out.

Making plans for that next year, 2009, sounds like a great idea. From Seattle to there for us is not bad. Especially in march or april. I am rain soaked and water logged by then. Drying my boat out in California is a good idea.

How long can we keep a post that says,

"Am I Stupid?", by Karl Brogger

at the top of the new posts list.

I'll bet till we all start sailing agian and loose interest.

Can you imagine a huge fleet of catamarans heading out of LB/LA Harbor making the run? We'd have to give the LA Times a heads up so we can get on the cover of the Sunday paper.
We have about 30 hour drive.

thanks Mike, you're a champ.

Well the general consensus is that I'm not the brightest bulb on the tree, but a remarkable amount of people think its a not the worst idea. I figured there would be alot more of "well.... its been nice knowing you" comments.

Oh I am not being critical, I would probably try sailing something like that myself. I just thought your post tittle was hillarious.

I start laughing every time i pull up the new posts and its up there again.

Kind of like the "Test" post on Catsailor, just won't quit.

Some one revived it from last year.
